Connersville is a small town in central Indiana, located on the Connersville River. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Decatur, IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name of the town was given to it by General John Conners after he explored it in 1791 while serving as an American Revolutionary War officer. The first permanent settler in what would become Connersville was David Noble in 1814. He and his family were among the original settlers who came to what is now Connersville from Pennsylvania during the early 1800s. David Noble's son, Edward Noble, brought over a large tract of land that became known as "Noble's Field." In 1836, John Prentice built a sawmill and gristmill on the river near where present day Interstate 65 meets Connersville Township. This mill continued operation until 1925 when it closed due to low demand for flour from local farmers. In 1847, Samuel Fenton arrived in Connerville and set up a frame store next to his home on West Main Street. This store soon became one of the largest stores in town and remained open until its closure in 1984. On October 14th, 1872 Isaac Newton founded Newton Academy which would later become Union High School (now Graysden High School). In 1902, Thomas Ahern purchased land east of current day I-65 which he donated to form Graysden Parkland Community School District No 2 with a goal of creating an environment that would promote physical education and provide opportunities for students from all backgrounds including poor children who could not attend other schools within district boundaries. By 1966 Graysden had grown so large that it merged with Union High School (now Graysden High School) making it one school district with two campuses - Graysden Campus located downtown and Union Campus located off I-65 just south of Old National Road./In 1978-1979 grades 9-12 operated out of two locations - One on North Main Street adjacent to GraysDEN Parkland Community Center while grades 1-4 operated out of four trailers parked behind Holy Cross Catholic Church/Both campuses were closed effective September 1979 due to budget cuts affecting public education throughout central Indiana.; In 1992 both campuses reopened under new management -Union Campus became Hennepin County Career & Technology Center whileGraysdan Campus became Kendall County Technical College.- Headquartered atGrayson Campus since 1998., On February 25th, 2000 Hennepin County voters approved funding for construction of a new $101 million high school campus adjacent to Grayson Campus pursuant to Local Option 2 passed by initiative referendum November 3rd 1999./Construction began on July 10th 2001 and ended on September 30th 2002; The new high school opened August 15th 2003 and currently serves as Central Indiana’s only postsecondary educational institution administered by Hennepin County government.- Today our community has more than 11K students enrolled at both campuses combined!
