Connersville is a small town in Scranton County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,603 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Conyers–Montgomery Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Connersville was Isaac Conners who arrived in 1814. His son Amos also settled in Connersville and operated a gristmill until his death in 1845. Daniel Conner built a frame house on the east side of First Street in 1847. He was an early promoter of agriculture and local industry including a tannery and sawmill. Other pioneer families include Theys, McNulty, O'Malley and Morey. The town began to grow rapidly after railroad construction improved transportation options for settlers near the end of the century. In 1889, Mayor John Hickey approved plans for a new schoolhouse which would serve as the town's first stop on the newly constructed Indianapolis-Scranton Railway (IR). The new school opened its doors on September 9th, 1890 and soon became known as "the Alma Mater." Over time, other industries have been added to Connersville such as manufacturing (paintball game operations), retail services (CVS Pharmacy & Meijer department stores) or agricultural production (grain elevator). In recent years there has been considerable growth spurred by development proposals for properties bordering downtown Connersville along Second Street including several high-end condos/apartments/hotels currently under consideration as well as additional retail space within easy walking distance of both restaurants and local shopping centers including Macy's Department Store and JCPenney Department Store - two major anchors currently responsible for approximately 60% of all locallyprocured goods within 2 miles Of Downtown Scranton County limits! Connersville was founded in 1814 by Nicholas Conners. The town became a center for lumber and transportation, as it was on the main road from Ohio to Indiana. In 1837, the town had a population of about 1,500 and it grew rapidly, with over 4,000 residents by 1840. By 1850, Connersville had become a city and its population reached 5,000. The city prospered until the early 20th century when industries began to decline in America and Connersville lost its status as a major center of commerce. Today, much of the former downtown area is vacant or used for housing developments.
