Connersville is a small town located in Delaware County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. The town was founded by John Conners in 1810. It was originally called "Harrisonville" and "Coon Rapids". The name changed to Connersville in 1836 because of the addition of land from John Conners' father-in-law, James Conners. In 1856, the first post office in Delaware County was established at Connersville. In 1863, the first school was built in Connersville. In 1865, a Methodist church was built here. In 1870, a gristmill and sawmill were erected here. A railroad depot and fire station were also built here in that year. In 1886, a grocery store and farm stand were erected on the site of what is now the local high school football stadium (now known as "Conner's Stadium"). The first store opened here in 1889. By 1901, there were 10 businesses operating here including five stores and two hotels/motels; one bakery; one blacksmith shop; two grain elevators; three physicians' offices; two churches - First Baptist Church (founded about 1830) and Methodist Episcopal Church (from 1855), both with their own pastor; one printing press; four schools: an elementary school for boys (1886); a high school for girls (1901); and one college preparatory academy which became known as Eastern Illinois Normal School (now Eastern Illinois University) after it moved to its present location on Main Street east of US- 12th Street in 1922).
