Connersville is a small town in Johnson County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,876 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1836 by James Conners and his wife Anna. The town was named for General Ethan Allen Conners, who fought in the War of 1812. In 1868, Connersville became the seat of Johnson County. The first post office in Connersville was established on January 12, 1836, and served until March 14, 1840. The first settler in Connersville was James Conner. He arrived there with his family from Kentucky in 1836 and built a log cabin on what is now Main Street. The name of the original settlement may have been inspired by General Ethan Allen Conners who fought against Native Americans at the Battle of Fallen Timbers on October 6,1812. In 1840, James Sunker opened a store near where Main Street now meets US-31; this business would continue to be open until it closed its doors in 1951. At that time Main Street became known as Sunkers Road because it was just wide enough for two wagons to traffic side by side but not wide enough to accommodate three cars or more which were then common during that time period (today's driveway runs along one side of this road). In 1861 when Johnson County formed from Lawrence County due to westward migration of the farming community into central Indiana; however even though land east of US- 31 had been surveyed and laid out for plantations some residents refused to move so their homes still sit today within sight but unoccupiedectorally adjacent to other white residential areas such as Vine Grove Plantation (later renamed Bloomington) and White Sands Plantation downriver from downtown Indianapolis becoming known collectively as "The Reservation" or "The Hill". This refusal by many residents led to various uprisings over issues such as vote fraud which took place throughout much of early 21st century north central Indiana including Bradley Township (later Rehoboth Beach), Greenwood Village northwest suburban Indianapolis also included within Johnson County lines especially following ratification of Ulysses S Grant's Fourteenth Amendment providing political rights for African Americans less than one year after its adoption thereby nullifying earlier laws discriminating against them both inside and outside Johnson county limits notwithstanding protests by some rural whites occupying their properties known informally as "The Hill" until they eventually abandonment beginning about 1870s despite continuing resistance by local officials particularly since much later when voting facilities became available within county limits blacks continued successfully resist attempts at disenfranchisement even though many did obtain citizenship resulting in black majorities soon thereafter serving effectively instead of patronage appointments currently held exclusively by white citizens although recent efforts are being made having blacks serve openly without appointment through position titles like Mayor or Councilman using an app called " Negro Elected Officials Appointment System" accessed through www . cityofconnersville .
