Columbus, Indiana is a small community in the northwest corner of Vigo County, Indiana. The population was 2,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute metropolitan area. Columbus is located on US-30 about 12 miles north of Terre Haute and 23 miles west of Indianapolis. The first European to visit Columbus was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1515. He named it Piscina because it looked like a well. In 1612, French explorer and missionary Jacques Cartier entered the area and called it La Cité des Anges because he had seen an angelic being fly over it on his ship,lequesias. The name stuck and eventually became Columbusville after General Robert E. Lee visited the community in 1886 while campaigning for election as President of America. Incorporated as a village on November 1, 1868 by order of Mayor John Witherspoon, Columbus quickly grew into a thriving commercial center with its own school system and post office (the first in Vigo County). By 1890 there were over 600 residents living in what is now Columbusville. Today, most residents are engaged in agriculture or other business activities that have supported their economy since before prohibition created prohibition-era industries such as bootlegging and smuggling which continue to this day; however some residents still indulge in distillery tours during Prohibition time period when alcohol sales were legal hereabouts The city limits extend just eastward to include parts of Terre Haute

In 1512, Columbus made the first landfall on American soil. He was aboard the "Santa Maria" when he discovered America and named it after the Virgin Mary. After landing in what is now known as Indiana, Columbus founded two new settlements- La Veta and Santo Domingo. These were followed by other settlements in what is now Ohio and Illinois. In 1492, Christopher Columbus sent a letter to King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain announcing his discovery of America. This event helped spread the word about America and created excitement among people throughout Europe. The following year, Ferdinand and Isabella granted Columbus a charter to establish a colony in Florida on November 12th. This led to increased commercial activities within Spanish America which resulted in more wealth being generated for the king and queen. By 1502-1503, there were over 200 Europeans living in Florida including some who had been dispatched by Columbus himself. The new settlers quickly realized that they needed land for their growing population so they began to explore Native American territory for potential properties. However, because of this exploration activity as well as Indian raids against European colonists, warfare between groups became increasingly common throughout much of Spanish America (Krause 2009). On January 1st, 1519, after years of planning and fundraising by various individuals and groups within Spain, Portugal, or Mexico City respectively- Christopher Columbus finally set sail from Sevilla Harbor with his three ships carrying over 1 million passengers on board- an event that has come to be known as “The Day Of The Cross” (Fernandez 2002). Although many believed that he would never make it back alive due to disease or weather conditions at sea- his men faced great danger while sailing across vast oceans but eventually reached land on October 14th near present day Tampa Bay Florida (Fernandez 2002). Upon landing on September 6teenth at Jamestown Island Colony he claimed this area for Spain under the name California (Lopez 2003). One hundred years later another group of Spaniards landed here also claiming this area but soon abandoned it because of hostile natives (Hermann 2006). As time passed more people arrived seeking opportunities in what was once called California but again abandoned it because of difficult terrain or lack thereof (Hermann 2006; Fernandez 2002; Lopez 2003). After several failed attempts during which both hectic travel along with a lack of food caused him intense health problems- Christopher COLUMBUS'S FIRST AMERICAN SETTLMENT IN AMERICA A Model Village:Columbus Settlement Sites Christopher Columbuss initial settlement efforts were designed primarily for economic reasons rather than religious purposes although there may have been some Christian converts among his early followers (Goudreau 1993a; Goudreau 1993b; Krause 2009). At least one source reports that Colombuss initially intended onlyto establish a trade post along the route between Europe and Asia but soon learned that “the Indies [were] all fullof rich gold mines” so he began exploring further northward instead(Goudreau 1993a; Goudreau 1993b). It is interesting to note that although most historians believethat Columbuss landed at present day Tampa Bay Fla., there are certain evidence suggesting otherwise(Krause 2009) such as an artifact found off shore which appearsto be from an earlier date than any evidence currently available(Krause 2009)!
