The first vessel to be commissioned by the new nation was USS Constitution, which was launched on October 3, 1787. The ship carried a crew of 14 men and served as a flagship during the Revolutionary War. After the war ended, Constitution was used as a training platform for future naval officers. In 1807, President James K. Polk ordered USS Missouri to be built at Norfolk Naval Shipyard. The ship entered service in 1810 and played an important role in USA’s victory over Mexico in1846. When it closed down in 1865, Missouri had been decommissioned for more than 20 years. However, it was reactivated in 1880 and played an important role in US Naval operations during World War I and World War II. It finally retired from service in 1970 after serving 45 years afloat. Nowadays, Missouri is kept at Pier 9 near downtown Columbus as part of the Smithsonian National Museum of American History’s collection of maritime artifacts

Navy Gift History in Columbus, Indiana In 1812, the United States of America was founded. In that year, Commodore John Hawkins led a group of American sailors who sailed to India in search of new opportunities. They discovered the city of Mumbai and decided to set up a trading post there. The first American store in Mumbai was owned by Captain James Cook and his team. Then, in 1814, United States Rear Admiral David Dixon took over the post and started selling goods from Fort Dearborn at Sadbhavnagar (now Shivaji Park) on the banks of the Ganges River. This was an important event because it helped make India open to trade. Commodore John Hawkins returned to America in 1815 and started setting up more posts on Indian soil. He also began exploring what lay beyond our shores. When he found out about this landlocked continent called South America, he decided to explore it further. He sent a party of men into South America under the command of Lieutenant Juan de la Hoz. They explored for two years before returning with reports back home that there were no settlements or any signs of life beyond what they had seen on their trip! This news came as a great surprise to General Anthony Wayne who had been planning to conquest South America since his inauguration as President four years earlier! Commodore John Hawkins' explorations laid the groundwork for future American conquests across Central America, Peru and Brazil!
