The Columbus, Indiana Air Force Base has a rich history dating back to World War II. The base was originally known as the "Columbus Army Ammunition Plant." It was established in 1942 as part of the United StatesAAF during World War II, and became operational in October of that year. The plant produced ammunition for the Allied Forces in Europe. During the war, the airbase operated from various locations throughout Ohio and Indiana. In 1946, it moved to its current location at Columbus Airport. The airbase continued to produce munitions until 1969 when it was mothballed. In 1971, it reopened as an Air Force Base under the command of Major General Curtis LeMay. From then on, it served as home to fighter aircraft and bomber forces both United States and NATO countries. It is currently one of America's most important military installations outside of Washington D.C., with over 60 wartime units stationed here including F-16 Fighting Falcons and A-10 Thunderbolt II Aircraft carriers! The United States Air Force gifted the city of Columbus, Indiana with an A-4 Skyhawk fighter jet in 1988. On July 6th, 1990, the aircraft was present during a ceremony at the airport to celebrate the installation of new asphalt runway and taxiway.
In 1512, Christopher Columbus discovered the New World. He was looking for a new route to Asia when he found this land. The people of this land called themselves the Algonquians. They didn't know about Spain and its empire. So, Christopher Columbus set out to find them and learn more about them. He journeyed along the coast of what is now Indiana and Ohio until he finally reached their land in 1492. It wasn't long before he realized that this was different than where he had been before- these people were called the Algonquian Indians! This led him to believe that there was a new route to Asia waiting for him! So, instead of returning home like everyone else expected, Christopher Columbus decided to explore this new world further! He continued his travels until he finally arrived in America in 1494! These two explorers were sent by King Ferdinand III of Aragon as part of an expedition known as La Via Moveria. Unfortunately, they never got very far because they ran into Native Americans who killed them all including Cabot's mapping partner Giovanni da Verrazzano. However, it is believed that Cabot's letter describing his trip survived and even helped lead to Spanish exploration across North America during the Age of Discovery!

In 1492, Christopher Columbus was founded the city of Santo Domingo on the island of Hispaniola. From this new settlement, Columbus and his crew sailed to America in search of a new land to conquer. After landing on Margarita Island in what is now Puerto Rico, Columbus discovered that he had walked on the same continent as Native Americans for centuries! He named this land America after himself, and began planning his next step-the journey back home. The first European settlers in what is now Indiana were French colonists who came to work on the Erie Canal. In 1812, when war between Great Britain and France broke out, American forces invaded Canada and burned Montreal before invading Indiana. In 1814, General Anthony Wayne sacked Fort Dearborn and captured nearly all of Ohio before being defeated by General Andrew Jackson at Battle of New Orleans. This event helped initiate the Mexican-American War which ended with Mexico ceding California to Ulysses S. Grant in 1848. As America became more populated, trade increased along with exploration into new lands-this led directly to the discovery of oil reserves in Texas in 1901 and natural gas reserves near Cincinnati in 1903. Indianapolis saw its first commercial airliner service from an airport located just outside town in 1927! The city has continued to grow throughout its history with skyscrapers being erected atop former factories throughout the years including One Symphony Center (now known as Lucas Oil Stadium) which replaced Municipal Auditorium as one of North America’s largest stadiums during its original construction project that lasted from 1924 until 1976!
