Clarksville was founded in 1821 by Captain John Sather and his family as an Indian Trading Post on the site of present day Clarksville Township. The post office was opened in 1825 and remained open until 1907. In 1866, Colonel George Crampton brought over a hundred acres (40 hectares) of land to Clarksville from Illinois for $1,000 cash and 10 negro slaves. This area became known as "Crampton's Corner". The first coffee house in Clarksville was called "The Coffee House" and it operated from 1827-1828. It was built by Captains Sather, Canby, Chilson, Dickson and others who used it to trade with Indians and French Canadians. In 1830, Jonathan Dayton opened a trading post on what is now Main Street which served as a center for trade with nearby central Ohio communities such as Terre Haute and Westfield. At this time there were only three warehouses in central Indiana: one owned by Captain John Sather, one owned by Major Nicholas de la Halleigne and oneowned by Drury & Company near Fort Dearborn on the Ia-Kuskokwim River which ship engaged in salt productions carried goods upriver to Greencastle where they were offloaded onto smaller boats before being transported downriver to market at Baltimore or Philadelphia where they sold for export back home.$2 per cordaloon load The first shipment of coffee beans arrived here at Louisville on July 3rd 1840 In 1865 Colonel George Crampton donated 20 acres (8 hectares) of land adjacent to his old mill site south of Clarksville for use as an agricultural college farm but no building ever arose from this donation because he died without leaving any children behind to carry out his wishes!
