The first coffee beans were brought to Clarksville, Indiana by John Clarkson in 1892. He and his brother, J.B., started a small roasting business together. The first coffee shop in Clarksville was opened in 1907 by Julius Kapp and his wife Anna. The first espresso machine was bought new from Italy in 1922. In 1949, the Stephenson family bought the business and it continued under their ownership until 1961 when it passed away into private hands. In 1954, Donny Stephenson started brewing coffee at their home on Main Street. This led to the beginning of what is now known as the Old World Coffee chain which operates today out of three restaurants across Indiana: Donny's Place (Clarksville), Joe's Cafe (Junction City), and Blue Bottle Coffee (Indianapolis). The Stephenson's are credited with popularizing drip coffee drinking in America. They also pioneered the use of air-tight cans for storage and helped develop pour over methods for cup design which continue to be used today. One of Clarksville's most famous sons, Tim Scudderman, took over management of the Old World Coffee chain after Donny Stephenson died in 1984. Under Scudderman's leadership, Old World Coffee became one of America’s most successful small batch roasters with multiple gold medals awarded from various industry awards including Best Roaster at the XVIII International Roastery & Cafés Competition in 2007 and 2008; First Place at the 2010 Small Batch Brewers' Cup; Third Place at Expo “World Fair” Amsterdam; Fourth Place at USA National Homebrewers Convention – Chicago; SixthplaceUSA National Homebrewers Convention – Stroudsburg PA In addition to their award winning coffeescripts they offer a variety of foods such as pastries, sandwiches/tarts/desserts etc... Their latest venture is called 'Timeless Kitchen'. It is an intimate café housed inside a brick building on State Rd 317 near Rosedale High School that offers paired seating for up to 12 people around two communal tables where customers can enjoy items like salads or pizzas made fresh daily using ingredients sourced from local farmers markets

Clarksville was founded in 1814 by Major General James H. Caldwell, who named it for Colonel John Clarks of the British army. The first store in town was established by Mr. and Mrs. Elisha Dickinson in 1826, and the first school was constructed in 1830. In 1837, the first post office was opened here, and during the 1840s, Clarksville became a center of trade and commerce. It also grew to become a small port on the Ohio River. In 1861, Confederate General Robert Ewell's army invaded Indiana and burned down most of Indianapolis before marching into Kentucky to join Lee's forces there. That same year, Clarksville became an important Confederate supply depot until its surrender on April 9th following which it reverted to Union control under terms of the Treaty of Paris The town experienced several fires over the years including one that destroyed most of downtown in 1865 while also setting off a large amount of smoke and fire as well as creating some damage to buildings Today, much of what once characterized Clarksville has been replaced by modern amenities such as shopping malls and restaurants with retail space remaining scattered around older warehouses that have been preserved for exhibition purposes
