The Clarksville National Guard was organized on November 25, 1861. The first national guard unit to be formed in the state of Indiana was Company A, 5th Regiment of Mounted Infantry. The regiment was made up of men from Clarksville and other surrounding villages. The unit served under the command of Lieutenant Colonel John Day until it was disbanded on May 12, 1865. Clarksville National Guardsmen serve in many capacities within the state and country today. They are currently assigned to the Indiana Army National Guard as part of the 9th Infantry Division stationed in Indianapolis. These soldiers have exhibited their patriotism by participating in numerous military exercises and deployments across the United States since their organization. Since its inception, Clarksville's national guard has donated items such as helmets, rifles, coats, tents and more to various charities throughout the years. The Clarksville National Guard was organized on December 16, 1916. The first National Guard unit in Clarksville was the 151st Infantry Regiment. It was disbanded in 1917. On October 1, 1918, the Indiana National Guard was activated and it consisted of the 161st Infantry Regiment and the 164th Infantry Regiment. These units were redesignated as the 5th Armored Division on November 15, 1918. The 5th Armored Division was disbanded on May 9, 1919 when its members were re-organized as part of United States Army Corps of Engineers. The remnants of this unit served during World War II as part of Tenth Army ( commanded by General George Custer).
Clarksville is a small town in Hendricks County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,796 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute Metropolitan Statistical Area. Clarksville was founded by English colonists in 1785 as a small log cabin community on the edge of what is now Hendricks County. The original land for Clarksville was purchased from the Peoria Indians. The first store was built in 1875 and it served as the nucleus of town until 1909 when a new store building and post office were constructed. In 1916, Clarksville had its first school and two years later it also had its first church which still operates today as a chapel. Clarksville has been home to many businesses over the years including an auto dealership, grain elevator, dry goods store, bank and several other businesses that closed down or moved out of town over time. Today much of Clarkson's commercial district is used for residential purposes with only a few scattered businesses remaining downtown along US-23 (now I-65). The current mayor of Clarksville is Ron Wessels who took office in January 2009 after serving two terms as mayor of Terre Haute Township nearby.
