The area was then known as "Mound City" and the first European-American settlement in the area. The area became a part of the Indian Territory and was under military rule for many years. In 1856, soldiers from Fort Creighton arrived in Clarksville and established a garrison. This fort served as a training ground for future U.S. Marines and Army officers until it was closed down in 1923. In 1861, General Andrew Johnson ordered all U.S.-owned land east of Illinois be leased to the state of Indiana for military purposes only. This action allowed for more open access to land which would later become Clarksville's downtown district. In 1865, General Joseph Ewing arrived in Clarksville with 2,000 men to take control of local militia forces used by Unionists during the Civil War. After coming into town, General Ewing founded what is now called Battle Creek Arsenal which produced artillery ammunition for both Union and Confederate armies during the war. Clarksville has been home to various armed forces units throughout its history including: 1st Infantry Regiment (1876-1902), 9th United States Cavalry Regiment (1920-1924), First Tennessee Infantry Regiment (1897-1969), Sixth Infantry Division (1994-2006) and Tenth Army Corps Reserve Unit (1982-1983). For over 100 years, Clark County has also been home to The Kentucky National Guard unit that functions as an armed force reserve squadron within Kentucky's National Guard system

The racial makeup of the town was 93% White; 2% African American; 0% Native American; 0% Asian; 0% Pacific Islander; 2% from other races; and 2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5%. There were 614 households out of which 30% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54% were married couples living together, 9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31% were non-families. 24%, or 25 out of every 100 females, lived alone who did not have children

Clarksville is a small town in southwestern Indiana, United States. The population was 2,272 at the 2010 census. Clarksville is part of the Terre Haute–Clearfield County Metropolitan Statistical Area. Clarksville was founded on December 8, 1800 by Captain James Fenton and his family as a trading post on thepresentday site of Clarksburg. A post office was first established in 1801, and by 1811 had outgrown its original building. In 1818, the Fenton brothers donated land to make way for Clarksville's first school. The first buildings were built on what is now Main Street. The town rapidly grew and soon became an important factor in the region due to its natural resources: coal, oil shale, limestone, iron ore and timber. By 1902, Clarksville had become one of Indiana's largest cities with over 50 businesses and 100 residents. Steel production began in nearby Terre Haute in 1923 and quickly overwhelmed Clarkesville's industries; however, plans for a new steel plant in Clarkesville were abandoned after World War II when steel prices crashed. However, during this time period there also emerged some notable individuals from Clarksville who exerted an impact on American culture: Drayton Gaylord Goodloe served as president of Purdue University from 1927 to 1951; artist Roy Lichtenstein lived and worked intermittently in Clarksville until his death in 1988; actor/director William Holden moved to Clarksville from Cincinnati after winning an Academy Award for Best Actor for his role as jockey Tex Rickard opposite Katharine Hepburn in "Oklahoma!" In 1958 General Motors purchased controlling interest in GMC-Ford Motorsports Corporation which then produced NASCAR events at Watkins Glen International Raceway near Buffalo New York while continuing operations at other races throughout the US including Atlanta (the location where Chevrolet dealerships have been since 1967), Charlotte (the location where DuPont Laboratories now operate), North Carolina's Carrboro (now Research Triangle Park) and Indianapolis (now Lucas Oil Stadium). It wasn't until 1978 that Clarkesville got its own high school when West Side High School openedfollowing plans by then-Mayor John Hulbert to move Westside Elementary School into space vacated by GMC-Ford Motorsports Corporation headquarters during their ownership of that facility which once occupied much of downtown Clearfield Township (). After years of struggle fund raising along with lessons learned from failures elsewhere withinINTERNATIONAL AUTOMOTIVE CORPORATION abandoned their efforts to build a new plant adjacentto WSHS just before it went bankrupt leaving most jobs lost as well... locals helped set up INFINITY SPORTS COMPANY which operated several local sports venues through out centralIndiana through much of this time including Tysons Corner Mall Arena & Event Center - home court for both USA Basketball Men’s National Team & Indy Horizon League Hockey teams thru out 2012 In 2020 CLARKSBURG COMMUNITY COLLEGE was established following approval from Clarensburg City Council providing acres surrounding WSHS property off limits zoned agricultural use will be dedicated to educational purposes with access available only to members or guests of CLARKSBURG AREA SCHOOL DISTRICT
