Clarksville is a small town in St. Joseph County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. Clarksville was founded in 1814 by General David Clark and his family as a frontier hamlet on the northern edge of what is now St. Joseph County. The first settler, John Lewis Collins, built a cabin on the bank of the White River and named it Clarksville after his father's home in Manchester, England. By 1830 Clarksville had 10 residents and six stores. In 1834 General Clark gave land to Daniel Boone for an academy to train future Kentucky settlers about Indian matters and civil government; this academy became known as DePauw University. In 1837 Clarksville had 30 residents and four stores when it became part of the new Town of Greenwood Township which also included Gary (now part of Carmel), Lawrenceburg (now Lawrence), Bloomfield (now Blackford), Uniontown (now Peru), West Liberty (later Terre Haute) and New Troy (later Noblesburg). In 1850 the village had 370 people living in 54 buildings; eight churches were built that year including First Christian Methodist Episcopal Church which served as meeting place for all comers until 1898; two schools were opened: one elementary school and one high school which were closed in 1908-9 because there wasn't enough space; two brick warehouses were built: The Clay Workshops on Main Street where bricks for buildings were made; later The Old Tanner Works on Fourth Street used to produce leather goods from horses' hides until 1917 when it was converted into office space; during prohibition years most businesses closed but some reopened with liquor sales continuing until 1933 when Prohibition ended nationwide. On July 15, 1951 voters approved a proposition to make Clarksville an incorporated city under Iowan Code § 53-2-5 while still using its local name "Greenwood Township". On November 3, 1971 Claes Voss announced he would not run for Mayor again but would continue serving as clerk/manager/chief engineer for Clarendon Township instead due to health reasons On January 9, 1973 Alderman Bob Nowak announced he would run against Claes Voss for Mayor but eventually dropped out due to illness only 2 weeks before election day On January 13 Floyd Aversa won against Alderman Nowak with nearly 70% of the vote

After being merged with other smaller villages during the 1800s, Clarksville experienced its heyday as an agricultural center during the late 19th century and early 20th century. It lost some of its importance after World War II when more people moved to larger cities in central Indiana or elsewhere. However, Clarksville has since revived as an arts and cultural center while remaining sleepy until night time according to some residents
