Clarksville is a town in Marion County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. Clarksville was founded in 1819 and named for Colonel David Clarks of Kentucky. The first post office was established in Clarksville on July 10, 1827. In 1830, the town became a part of Union Township and later Sherman Township. In 1853, it became an independent village and was renamed Clarksville after General James Biddle Clark who fought with General Winfield Scott at Bull Run Bridge during the American Civil War. TheClarkesville Volunteer Fire Company has been serving the community since 1892. The depot that stands today on Ulysses S. Grant Boulevard served as the center of mail service for all of Marion County until 1906 when USPS moved to their current facility located just east of town on Meridian Street. This depot was replaced by a new one located just north of town following a fire that destroyed many buildings in 1903 which caused much concern in the community about postal services being available any longer

In 1962, General Creighton Abrams presented Air Force Brigadier General Hoyt S Hamm with an Osprey Amphibious Assault Helicopter (AHA). This helicopter was used for amphibious warfare operations against enemy forces during Operation Neptune’s Spear. Since 1978, the USAF has given out more than 190 thousand servicemen and women with gifts including items such as vehicles, watch radios, motorcycles, tents and barracks units.
