There has been a history of the national guard in Chesterton, Indiana. The National Guard was first organized on April 15, 1892 as a response to the Panic of 1893. It was made up of men from different towns and villages throughout the state. At its peak, there were over 2,500 Guardsmen in Chesterton. The Guard has played an important role in both local and statewide events in the past. In 1934, it was honorarily placed into suspended animation by President Franklin D. Roosevelt as part of his emergency declaration for national defense purposes. From 1934-1939, it served as the primary law enforcement organization for the city of Indianapolis with jurisdiction over all but one block of downtown Indianapolis. The Guard also participated in several skirmishes during World War II including engagements at Fort Meade and Iwo Jima. After the war, many Guardsmen returned to their civilian lives but continued to serve through various peacekeeping missions around the world until their retirement in 1987. Today, there are approximately 3200 Guardsmen serving within Indiana’s military system providing security for state institutions and individuals while also providing support to numerous local events across our state each year including parades and fireworks displays throughout town square locations like Monument Hill and Evansville!

Chesterton is a small town in Jackson County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,883 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute metropolitan area. The first people to live in Chesterton were the Wabash Indians who came there in 1814. They built their own village and hunted game on their hunting grounds. In 1835, a group of men led by Elijah Porter set out from Chicago to found what would become Chesterton. They named their new town after Ernest Haddon Spurgeon, an English cleric who had been instrumental in helping them find land near Indianapolis. In 1840, the name change was made permanent when it was included as one of two townships included within the newly formed Jackson County; the other being Huntington Township. In 1870, development began on what would become Chesterton Heights and by 1880, many homes had been erected including a Masonic Lodge that still meets today. The community experienced some growth during World War I with soldiers coming through for assignments and civilian workers providing goods and services such as construction materials and food storage facilities. After war ended, much of the development slowed down due to restrictions placed on housing developments by local officials concerned about potential redevelopment or sprawl; however, some properties were eventually redeveloped into mixed-use structures such as a shopping center and high school which opened in 2002 according to plans filed with the city of Terre Haute planning commission According to 2000 US Census data released by the US Commission on Geographic Names®, which includes all incorporated municipalities within Jackson County*, Chesterton has a total population of 1,883 (based upon figures collected from 2006 municipal census).
