Chesterton, Indiana was a small town in northeastern Indiana until the early 20th century when it became an important military and naval base. The village of Chesterton was located on the banks of the Wabash River, about 15 miles south of Fort Wayne. In 1814, General Anthony Wayne's army invaded and conquered what is now West Michigan Territory, Operation Crossroads. Afterward, General Wayne ordered all soldiers to give their families Presents for Christmas. In 1827, Captain John Cook founded the first planing mill in Chesterton. Cook also opened a store in 1828 and built a gristmill in 1830. The first sawmill was built in 1840 by James Hays. In 1845, Charles Bickford started a blacksmith shop in town. By 1850, there were six tannery businesses with 7 employees each. In 1865 local merchant Isaac Beecher started supplying coal to Fort Wayne for use by the fortifications; this gave Chesterton its first brick ovens at that time In 1901, Colonel George Hindman organized the 1st Infantry Regiment from two companies which had been raised originally as part of Ohio's 2nd Infantry Brigade under Major-General Oliver Otis Howard during the American Civil War

Chesterton was founded in 1824 by George Augustus Fenton, a wealthy landowner and philanthropist. The town gained its name from the Chestnut Hill Road which ran through it. Fenton donated land to the town for a school, library, and other public buildings. In 1858, Chesterton became an incorporated town. The first mayor of Chesterton was John A. Hickey. The chestnut tree that is still present in the town is also credited with inspiring Chesterton's name. During World War II, many local businesses benefited from the production of munitions because of the large quantities of chestnuts that were grown in the area. Today, much of what made Chesterton so successful has been lost to time and change: The original school building is no longer standing; but the library remains operational and is now home to both the Town Council Chambers as well as various other city services inside. Additionally, there are several dozen historical artifacts located throughout the community which can be explored onsite or brought out for viewing during special events like antique car showdowns or music festivals; all while remaining accessible toians of all ages who enjoy learning about local history!
