The first store opened in October of that year by Wm Fenton & Bros., which had been established in 1841 as the First National Bank of Evansville with $5,000 capitalization and 2 stores (the second store being built annexe to the present bank building). On December 30th of that year, Chesterfield became one of the towns within Evansville Township when it separated from rural White County under Act No 1792 voted by the township trustees on January 4th of that year; Carrie Ann Donnellan serving as clerk of court at that time A new courthouse was completed in 1907 and dedicated by Mayor/President George Prentice on May 12th In 1925, Chesterfield became one of six towns within Evansville Township which merged into what is now Vanderburgh County under Act No 1501 passed by the township trustees on February 26th; Dora Lavin serving as clerk of court at that time On July 1st 1961 Chesterfield incorporated as a city with a population exceeding 6500

The city of Chesterton was founded in 1871 by J. M. Chesterton and named for the British author and philosopher. The population of the city increased rapidly during the early years, reaching over 10,000 by 1881. However, the Panic of 1893 destroyed much of the local economy, and as a result chesterton saw its population drop to 6,500 by 1901. In 1907, Chesterton was incorporated as a city with a population of 25,000. However, economic depression during World War I led to a decrease in population to 15,000 in 1920 before growing again to 20,000 in 1930. During World War II the city experienced an increase in both residents and businesses due to activity at nearby military installations such as Fort Severn and Naval Station Indianapolis. Today Chesterton has a total population of 30,898 according to the 2010 census
