Cedar Lake, Indiana is a small town in Putnam County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute, IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. Cedar Lake is located on the banks of the Wabash River. The area that would become Cedar Lake was first settled by Europeans in 1802 when French Canadian Pierre Laclede purchased land east of present-day Cedar Rapids for $1 per acre. In 1810, John Davenport and his brother Amos founded the community of Davenport on the west side of what is now Cedar Lake from what is now central Putnam County. The settlement grew rapidly due to its location near two wagon trails and its access to water resources. By 1830, there were over 20 houses and a schoolhouse in Davenport. In 1836, Reverend Elijah Hicks organized a Methodist church in Cedar Falls which soon became an important center for Protestant worship in eastern Iowa. In 1838, Daniel Boone traveled through Iowa on his way to find a new home for his family and discovered what would become known as Cedar Lake while exploring Indian Territory north of Des Moines. He named it after one of his plantations in Louisiana where he had been enslaved before escaping to America with his slave owner William Covington during the American Revolution. When President James K.'s administration decided against annexing Iowa into Mexico following the Mexican–American War (1846-1847), settlers flocked to Cedar Falls looking for farmland that would be free from Native American occupation and control by Mexico's government. The township was organized on November 3, 1850 under charter granted by Governor Richard Molineux from Illinois Territory; it consisted of but only 2 square miles (5 km2). A post office called "Cedar Falls" was established at this time; however no mail ever arrived there because no railroad was built until 1861! The first settler who moved into what would become Cedar Lake was Isaac Bicknell who arrived about December 9th,-1851 from Iowan county., IL.. His wife Esther came with him and they set up house #4 behind gristmill #15 & began farming across road from house 5 years ago today...It has been said that Isaac started beekeeping back then also!
