The Cedar Lake community is located on the banks of Cedar Creek, about 25 miles north of Indianapolis. The population of Cedar Lake was 3,814 as of the 2010 census. The origins of Cedar Lake can be traced back to 1869, when Augustus Cedar and his family settled in what is now known as the townsite of Cedar Creek. The Cederas were a farming family from Pennsylvania who came to Indiana to find new land and start anew. In 1869, Augustus Cedar purchased 640 acres (2 km²) of land near present-day Fort Wayne for $540. He named his settlement after one of his ancestors, who had died young at the age of 20 years old during the American Revolution in 1775. In its early days, Cedar Lake served primarily as an agricultural community with a few scattered businesses catering to local farmers and settlers alike. By 1900, however, the village had developed into a busy commercial center with over 50 businesses represented by a variety of industries including grocery stores, lumberyards, hotels/motels and machine shops. Today, there are still several small businesses operating within the framework of modern day industry that continue to contribute significantly to the economic vitality and cultural heritageof our Village!
