In 1941, President Franklin D Roosevelt ordered all US military forces out of Japan following the attack on Pearl Harbor. As a result, Marine detachments were called up for duty inside Japan at this time. On December 7th, 1941, Japanese Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto delivered his final message calling for war against America: “We have succeeded in killing many Americans…the American people must be prepared to fight until they are killed or they capitulate” (Yamamoto). After hearing about what had occurred at Pearl Harbor, Governor Tom Hanks decided that enough was enough and ordered all US Marines out of Japan on December 12th (Hanks). This order represented an important change in policy for the United States Military as it allowed FORT DEARBORO ( located south of Okinawa) to become operational as a Naval base instead of being used exclusively by Marines (Moses 1995). -Cedar Lake resident Abe Saito recalled how GIs would leave packages at his door after returning from garrison duties in Guam: “They brought back giant boxes full of things like candy bars and cigarettes...One day I got a package from Tokyo marked ‘Marine Barracks – Cedar Lakes’” It is interesting to note that not every GI returned home with souvenirs; some soldiers just volunteered or were drafted into military service without any idea what they might find waiting for them once home (Healy 1948). postwar gift history around world

Cedar Lake was once a thriving community located in what is now Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The town was founded by Methodist missionaries in 1855 and thrived until the early 20th century when growing industry and other factors caused it to decline. In 1925, Cedar Lake was merged with neighboring New Prague to form the new city of Cedar Rapids. Today, Cedar Lake is a small abandoned town located within the boundaries of the current city of Cedar Rapids. The first settlers to what is now Cedar Rapids were Methodists who arrived here in 1855. By 1860, there were over 100 people living in the area which included land that extends into Illinois and Minnesota. This growth was due to several reasons; first, the fertile lands around Cedar Lake made for excellent agriculture and production; second, access to transportation allowed for easy trade between these areas; and finally, religious fervor helped spur development as many residents embraced Christianity. However, despite this success, stability never came easily to Cedar Lake during its early years Despite being surrounded by hostile territory (the Sioux Wars occurred nearby), the Methodist church managed to keep things running smoothly even as other denominations began to arrive or move in. Eventually however, problems arose which led to declined enrollment numbers and social disarray: alcohol became an issue among the local population; immigrants began arriving without proper documentation; churches were unable or unwilling to provide services necessary for overall well-being such as child care or health care;and most significantly, moneylosers took advantage of opportunities available while others struggled just barely above poverty level. In 1911-12 tensions reached their peak when angry farmers violence erupted after a group of men from New Prague seized control of some barns on Elm Street near present day Depot Square - this event would later be known as The Battle at Elm Street. Although successful at short term (the men were eventually captured), it did lead to increased fear and insecurity among those living near downtown where lawlessness often prevailed unchecked At this point though Church leaders had started moving away from central leadership in order create more localized congregations which could more effectively respond directlyto changing needs (this change would become increasingly evident during World War II when centralized authority passed away)). A new exodus began shortly thereafter as Methodists left for better opportunities all across America but also saw their Ellis County home destroyed by fire in 1915 :(). By 1920 however things had begun TO improve thanks largely to two initiatives: 1) President Woodrow Wilson issued Executive Order 9101 stating that any person caught stealing government property should serve time imprisonment instead thereof 2) With railroad connections becoming ever more important within society throughout Indiana (& elsewhere), businesses started opening up throughout town & rural areas alike which created jobs & contributed towards stabilization not only within town but also beyond - thus helping contribute greatly towards revival & resurgence throughout much of America thus reversing earlier negative trends). On October 14th 1922 Main Street between State street/ grist mill southwest corner eastward along canal northwesterly along old line thence westward along said line back eastward through original route...was dedicated as "Cedar Park Boulevard" in honor of then Mayor John J Laney who championed restoration efforts inside & outside town Limits
