Cedar Lake is a small town in Indiana that has been around since 1827. The community was founded by Methodist missionaries, and it became an important center for coffee production in the early 19th century. In 1872, Cedar Lake became the first village to be organized in the state of Indiana. It remained an important community until the late 20th century, when its population decreased and it no longer had any commercial or agricultural significance. The history of coffee production in Cedar Lake began with a Single-Crop Plan System project initiated by Reverend James Gosset of Methodist church in 1827. This project aimed to improve coffee yields through increased planting and irrigation techniques. A second Single-Crop Plan System project was started in 1840 by Reverend John Hargrave of nearby Decatur Township. This project aimed to increase coffee acreage from 6 to 25 acres per year using drip irrigation techniques. These projects were successful, and they led to the development of Cedar Lake as a major center for coffee production in the early 19th century. By 1850, there were over 100 coffee farmers operating on property within 1 mile of Cedar Lake, including many people who had worked on these earlier projects. In 1865, Reverend Bayard Taylor founded what would become known as Taylor Coffee Company at Cedar Creek Falls near present day Elmira (then part of Decatur Township). This company began producing high-quality cup-of-coffee beans from local trees under a single bean variety control program that lasted for more than 50 years. During this time, Taylor Coffee Company produced some of the world's most popular cups of Joe from its Elmira facility. The company also developed other products such as educational materials and kitchen spices."

Cedar Lake is a small, but beautiful and well-known village in the Hancock County town of Cedarburg. It was founded in 1827 by General Ethan Allen and his army as a place to rest and store supplies before they continued their march eastward to war. The surrounding countryside was rich with timber, so the village quickly became known for its logging activity. Cedar Lake had a post office from 1864 to 1865, and also hosted a school from 1868 until it closed in 1974. The last resident died in 2001. Today, Cedar Lake retains much of its original charm. There are several small shops and restaurants within walking distance of the village center, as well as an ice cream parlor, two parks (one with tennis courts), a swimming pool, and a few homes. There is also an annual farmers market that takes place on Saturday mornings at Village Hall.

Cedar Lake was created from the merger of two smaller communities: Cedar Grove and Pleasant Prairie. The first residents of Cedar Grove were farmers who grew corn, hay, wheat, and other crops. They also raised pigs and chickens. The second group that moved to Cedar Lake were workers who built the Erie Canal. Many of these people had come from Manchester, England. The first store in Cedar Grove was started by a man named Isaac Sibley on December 21st, 1837. It was located between College Avenue and Center Street. That same year, the town of Pleasant Prairie was established east of Cedar Grove on what is now State Road 442 near mile marker 63 Pleasant Prairie was known for its excellent chicken eggs which were often sold at local markets throughout the area In 1840, a post office was founded at Pleasant Prairie with James Fenton as the first clerk In 1845-1846, property within present-day Cedar Grove village boundaries were surveyed for development into a township . This land later became part of Howard County
