The Marine Corps Deployment Gift History is a long and detailed document that goes back over fifty years. Denton Welch issued a regulation dictating that all Marines must send back at least one gift per month no matter what type of gift it was. As time passed and more Marines deployed worldwide, the tradition continued with Gifts being sent directly to families members rather than going through individual commanders. Carmel is a small, struggling town in central Indiana. It was founded by two brothers in 1827, and slowly grew to become a major center for potato farming and other agricultural interests. The town reached its peak of prosperity during the late 19th century, when it boasted a population of over 10,000 people. However, the town's fortunes eventually declined after World War I and the Great Depression. Carmel has since regained some degree of stability, but its economy remains much smaller than that of most similar towns in central Indiana. The Town of Carmel was laid out on February 4, 1827 by James Fenton and his partner Isaac Price. In 1829 Fenton's brother-in-law John Smith bought land around the present day Carmel Elementary School from him. Smith built a log cabin near the school as his headquarters while he awaited approval from the state government to build a more permanent structure. In 1840 James Fenton married Sarah Storer, daughter of Nicholas Storer Sr., one of Carmel's early settlers. The couple had four children: Anna (1841-1902), James (1843-1920), Viola (1845-1925) and George (1847-1924). A period of rapid growth followed for Carmel between 1840 and 1870; businessowners erected large frame buildings and increased their production capabilities with new methods such as horse power engines and water power plants. In 1870 however an abrupt slowdown occurred due to changing values within the Agricultural industry which were increasingly influenced by technological developments such as railroads and Des Moines Streetcars running through downtown Indianapolis making goods available at lower costs accessible to larger markets across America including Europe etcetera At this time particularly notable individuals associated with Carmel include Wm Jourdan who operated Jourdan’s Brewery which became nationally known for its porter beer until Prohibition made it illegal in 1938; Samuel Morse who developed Morse Code; Cyrus Kline who manufactured kitchen appliances including porcelain dishes; Anheuser Busch who began producing Budweiser beer in 1920; Alfred Sloan who worked on developing General Motors into what it is today

The nuns traveled to India to minister to the poor and found a convent in Carmel. The town got its name from the convent, which was located on the banks of the White River.
