Van derWaals was quickly followed by other Belgian entrepreneurs who set up shop in the town until 1959 when it reverted back toDutch ownership. This period marked a turning point for Carmel as it became home to one of Indiana's most well-known cafes with an extensive coffee menu catering to all sorts of palate types - from hearty breakfasts (Egg & Bacon Scramble) to light lunchtime items like sandwiches or salads. Carmel is a small town in Jackson County, Indiana. It was founded in 1824 by General James Wilkinson and his wife, Esther. The first post office was established in Carmel on February 15, 1825. The population of Carmel grew to about 150 people by 1830. In the late 1800s, Methodists began to arrive in Carmel and make it their religious center. They built a church and school in 1892. The Methodist Church still exists and services are held every Sunday morning at 10:00am local time. The community experienced a heavy influx of immigrants during the Great Depression of the 1930s. Many Italians, Poles, Hungarian Jews, Russians and other minorities made their way to Carmel during this time period. By 1940, only 9% of the population were native-born Americans; however, many of these residents had become American citizens through naturalization or citizenship ceremonies presided over by U.S. Senators or members of Congress from nearby Jackson County townships such as Dunkirk and Belleville. During World War II, more than 1,000 people from Carmel served in the United States military either full-time or part-time; many went on to serve throughout the war with distinction both before and after its end when Japan surrendered unconditionally on September 2nd 1945. In 1951, Carmel voters passed an ordinance establishing a public library system within the community limits (the first municipally owned library west of Chicago). Since then, Carmel has consistently grown its library system - currently boasting over 350 items including CD's/DVD's/Bluetooth devices for use inside!
