The first Roasters of Carmel roasted their coffee using small-batch roasts that were hand-selected and prepared with attention to detail. Today, many of the same principles still apply as long as the fresh roasted beans are purchased from a local roaster. The history of fresh roasted coffee can be traced back to 1892 when John Waddell started his own business in Carmel. He roasted his own coffee and sold it direct to customers. In 1904, Mr. Waddell partnered with Harry Kellar who also ran a grocery store in Carmel at that time. Together, they began marketing and selling roasted coffee products under the name “Leslie”s Coffee Shop & Cafe. In 1923, Leslie’s Coffee Shop & Cafe became known as The Old Dutch Roastery after it was moved from its original location on Delaware Street to its current location on Elm Street in Carmel. The first commercial processors of espresso were established in Milan, Italy in 1865 by Angelo Sanzone and Giovanni Cavalli which led to the production of high quality Italian espresso beans across Europe starting around 1870s until World War II when espresso beans became less popular because of rationing activities during World War II which caused many Italians to lose their jobs so they could not purchase cigarettes or other items essential for their lives

Carmel, Indiana is a small town located in the southern Indiana area and has been around since 1837. Carmel is known for its unique architecture, history, and people. The town was founded by Peter Carmel and John Stephenson as a farming community. The population of Carmel peaked at 10,000 in 1870, but today it has only 3,500 residents. The early history of Carmel can be traced to the 1800s when Peter Carmel settled in the area. He was a farmer who used to take his cattle out on the open prairies to graze. He also built a cabin near present day Carmel on the banks of the White River. For many years this was the only permanent home in the community. John Stephenson moved to this area from Lebanon County in 1837 and started trading goods with Native Americans and other settlers living near Chicago. One year he built a log cabin on what is now State Road 319 east of town on an upland parcel that he donated to the village for use as a courthouse square. This house still stands today and is known as John Stephenson House Museum (www://www-petercarmeloohioarchivesfoundationmsnbc21566485). In 1840 Stephenson married Sarah Burchardt and started raising crops on their farm northeast of town along State Road 317 (now Route 219). They had six children: three boys and three girls. After several successful years growing corn, potatoes, apples, & other vegetables near his farmstead on Black Ripple Creek (now Old US-24), John Stephenson decided to move his family westward into what is now northwestern Indiana along Kankakee River Valley Rd., where they became farmers again with their third son Lewis running an old mill downriver until 1902 when it went out of business due to lack of customers; Lewis then built another mill upstream which continued operation until 1959 when it closed due to competition from new dams downstream! Lewis’ Mill Site still features large piles of eroded red sandstone boulders lining both sides of Kankakee River Valley Rd., about one mile south-southwest of present day Carmel at milepost #492! From here you can follow logs dating back over 100 feet uphill (just past black rocks!) from Black Ripple Creek all the way upriver through “Lewis’ Mill Canyon” onto high bluffs overlooking much more recently developed villages below – long before there were any buildings or inhabitants anywhere near today’s Highway 219 intersection! It would have taken some time getting up these hills – probably hours if not days (!), even using traditional methods like wading across stream beds etc…. so we can view “Lewis’ Mill canyon” even today!!!! Anyway…from here another short distance downhill you reach Present Day Route 219 where your journey ends….. Thanks for listening!!!!!!!!!
