Some of the earliest coffee shops in Carmel were The Coffee Shoppe and Dutch Bros. Coffee, which opened in 1851. In 1865, The Travellers Coffeeshop was founded by John H. Dooley and his wife Sarah A. Dooley, and later renamed The Coffee Shed. In 1895, Harry Kipper opened the first Dutch Bros. Coffee shop in Carmel with two locations: one on 3rd Street and one on 4th Street. The Dutch Bros./Kipper chain continued until 1970 when it merged with Peet's Coffee to form Peet's/Dutch Bros., which still operates as a separate company today.

Carmel, Indiana is a small town in southern Indiana. It is the county seat of Howard County and was founded in 1836. The population was 10,843 at the 2010 census. Carmel is located on the east bank of the White River and has a humid subtropical climate (Köppen: Cfa). The Town site was laid out by John Jacob Astor in 1836 as part of his plan to establish an agricultural center on the eastern banks of the river. Astor named his new town for his sister-in-law, who had been born in Carmel, Italy. At first only about 150 people lived in Carmel; however, it soon became one of the leading industrial towns in Indiana. The manufacture of shoes, cloths, cigars, boots and saddles were among the principal industries in early Carmeltown. In 1892–93 a group of local businessmen organized what became known as "The Association for Betterment of Carmel", which worked to improve conditions for residents and promote economic development within the community. In 1912 a new schoolhouse replaced an earlier building that had been destroyed by fire. In 1916 work began to build a water tower that would become one of Carmel's most famous landmarks. That same year also saw the launch of what eventually became known as The Voice Of America radio station from nearby Terre Haute. During World War II nearly all manufacturing stopped except for munitions production; however, many businesses did switch their operations to wartime efficiency measures such as using automated equipment and closed shops Thursday nights so employees could go home without having to work Saturdays or Sundays. By 1945 most businesses had reopened but some lost their land markets due to postwar inflationary pressures; nevertheless several major plants closed during this time including those belonging to United States Steel Corporation and Vinson Mfg Company (now WOODY HALL). However business rebound starting in 1949 with reactivation/opening of several smaller plants plus growth in services such as health care and education provision through Community College District No 2 (later IUPUI) . A number private companies have played important roles throughout recent years including Oneida Paper Products which manufactures paper products made from woodchips; Carnac Corporation produces chemicals used mainly for agriculture purposes; ATKH corporation manufactures turbines used principally within energy industry; USBANKNOMICS provides financial consulting services; Polaris Group manufactures bearings essential for trucking industry etc.; while Lawrence Controls Inc., now Delphi Controls USA LLC provides engineering services related to control systems

In order to understand how this industry has developed over the years, it is important to first understand its origins. The first coffee was roasted by Spanish farmers in the 16th century. It was traded between Spain and Portugal, and became popular in Europe because it was smooth, expensive, and enjoyed high praise from both groups. Coffee began to spread throughout North America during the early 1800s when English colonists arrived in what is now Canada. They brought with them their love of tea, which gave rise to the idea that coffee would be just as good if not better than tea. This new industry quickly grew in popularity, and by 1828 had become an $8 million business! During this time period, different types of beans were used for different purposes: Sumatra for strong espresso drinks; Java for a smoother cup of java; Ethiopian for its unique flavor profile; Colombian for its rich notes of chocolate; etc. The variety found today is thanks largely to advances in technology – such as proper grinding processes – as well as advancements in breeding methods (such ascross-breeding pure Brazilian beans with Arabica). Today’s artisanal coffee scene is very diverse – there are many different roasters and producers scattered across North America (including Australia), Europe (particularly France), South America (Brazilianos especially), Asia Pacific (New Zealanders working with Indonesian Typo Coffee Partnerships), Africa (!), and even Antarctica! There are also growing numbers of small-scale cafes all over the world that serve only handpicked or organic products from specific regions or countries.

Carmel was founded in 1824 as a village on the banks of the White River. The first settler in Carmel was Nicholas Goodrich, who built a log cabin and grew corn. By 1830, the population had grown to around 25 people. In 1834, John Soward and his brother-in-law, Caleb Smith, established the first post office in Carmel. In 1841, Samuel Gridley purchased land in what is now Carmel from Nicholas Goodrich for $4 per acre. Gridley began building homes and selling them to settlers. He also started a gristmill that produced flour for local residents and sold it to customers in neighboring towns. In 1865, when Indiana became an abolition state, Carmel voted against secession because it felt that its slaves would be free if they left the state. The town prospered during the Civil War thanks to jobs at the gristmill and slave trade; however, after the war ended, most of Gridley's property reverted back to private ownership. The gridlock of traffic on White River caused by farmers transporting goods upriver caused problems for Carmel during Prohibition; however, much of this problem has since been solved as a result of development along White River Boulevard. Carmel continued to grow rapidly during World War II due to its proximity to munitions plants and military personnel stationed in nearby Indianapolis (especially Fort Dearborn). The town experienced some growth spurt after 1945 as veterans returned home from World War II and started families. It slowed down again in the postwar years as more people moved into other parts of Indiana or out of Indiana altogether; however, recent growth has been resumed with support from several large developers including The Related Companies LLC., which owns many properties adjacent to White River Boulevard within walking distance of each other throughout Carmel Township
