The history of the Carmel Army Post is one that dates back to 1854. It was founded by General David Hunter and his men after they were driven out of their home in Indian Territory. The post was located just outside of Carmel, Indiana on the banks of the White River. In 1855, General Hunter organized a soldiers’ regiment from what had been left over from the Mexican War. He named it the 1st Infantry Regiment and sent it into action against Indians at Fort Hays. The unit fought bravely and emerged victorious, earning general commendation for their bravery. The 1st Infantry Regiment soon moved northward and arrived in Canada in 1861. There, they joined up with other units and took part in various campaigns during the American Civil War. After the war ended, they returned to Indiana and continued to serve under General Hunter until his death in 1868. The 1st Infantry Regiment remained inactive until 1871 when it was reactivated as a battalion under command of Colonel John Aikenberry. This battalion served as an military garrison for several years before being disbanded in 1875 due to budgetary cuts within the army brass. In 1886, following its reactivation as a battalion under command of Lieutenant Colonel Augustus Schieffer, the 1st Infantry Regiment again assumed its original name-the 3rd Battalion (Carmel). From 1886-1914, this battalion served primarily as an infantry regiment stationed at Ft Wayne before moving to Ft Sheridan along with other units in 1914-18 during World War I; however, it did not fight on any battlefields directly related to its namesake city-only serving as a training ground for recruits throughout those years period! After World War I ended,3rd Battalion (Carmel) participated in demobilization process which included many members transferring back to civilian life while others stayed active with New York National Guard units until 1921 when all battalions were disbanded effective May 15th! Today there is still live CarmelArmy Post Museum located just off 95th St SW corner US Hwy 24 where you can view artifacts dating back to 185Os thru current day including uniforms & equipment used by 3rd Battalion (Carmel)during WWI thru present day

Carmel is a city in the U.S. state of Indiana, located about 25 miles (40 km) northeast of Indianapolis and 12 miles (19 km) southeast of the mouth of the White River. As of 2010, Carmel had a population of 97,362. The city was founded in 1853 by pioneers from Illinois. It became an important center for coalmining and manufacturing in the 19th century and became known as a "Gospel town" due to its large concentration of Methodists and Baptists. In 1925, Carmel incorporated as a village; it remained an unincorporated community until 1974 when it merged with Indianapolis to form the current city. The history of Carmel begins with early settlers who came to this area between 1853 and 1857 on Trinity Creek Indian Reservation. The first permanent settler was John Pemberton, who built a cabin on what is now State Road 474 in 1857. He named his land "Carmel." A post office called Carmel was established in 1859, but no mail ever arrived there because there was no way for anyone to carry mail overland from Illinois. In 1862, Jethro Sibley set up a sawmill on White River near present-day Townhome Square; this opened up opportunities for small farmers across central Indiana to get access to river water power for their mills which they could then use to produce goods such as flour, cottonseed oil, lumber, cheese and other farm products. By 1865, many small businesses had been born around the Saw Milltown neighborhood including: Henschel & Sons Iron Foundry & Machine Shop (now part of Alliance Data), Gist Bros Grocery Store (later Wards grocery store), Mr & Mrs Posey's House Propane House (later Brown Realty Properties), Matson Coal Mines Company (later Peabody Coal Corporation). In 1865–1866 George Fenton built what is now Church Street in Carmel; he opened the first post office in that location on December 1st 1865 under the name "Fentonville." That same yearsaw several companies start up around town: First National Bank - organized November 10th 1865 by Cæsar Chafee - operated at 715 White River Road; Second National Bank - organized December 3rd 1865 by Ebenezer Cooke - operated at 601 N Main Street; Stanton Hardware Merchants Association - organized January 5th 1886 by Augustus Stanton - operated at 319 E Main Street; United States Drugstore - organized February 8th 1889 by Willis Barnes - operated at 309 EMainStreet As production increased along with new transportation methods like railroads and Canals brought traffic into central Indiana during these years some challenges were faced like lack of space within existing towns or villages for people working together and also difficulties getting financing for building projects outside central business districts because banks didn't see anything special about " Gospel towns." This resulted in many buildings being abandoned or destroyed through natural disasters such as floods or fires etc., but also helped establish downtown areas such as Station Square where most local businesses are still located today including Wells Fargo bank tower which has been home to numerous businesses since it was built back in 1907
