Carmel, Indiana is a small town in the U.S. state of Indiana. The population was 9,863 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Carmel-Petersburg-Hobart, IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Carmel was John Smeaton in 1814. The first post office in Carmel was established in 1826, and it moved to its current location on State Road 21 in 1901. The town was named for Marion County's eldest daughter, who had married George Waddell of Vandalia, Ohio. The community grew rapidly during the late 1800s due to its strategic location as a stop on the Indianapolis and Chicago Railroad and its access to heavy industry such as foundries, mills and breweries. This growth led to rapid development of both commercial and residential areas including numerous homes that still stand today. In 1926, Carmel became one of four towns within Johnson County (the others being Terre Haute and Warsaw) when Johnson County was created from parts of Hendricks and Posey counties. At that time Johnson County included all of what is now Butler Township (including Carmel), most of Howard Township (including Noblesville), all but a tiny slice of Knox Township (including Plainfield) and all but two blocks of Porter Township (including Fishers). During World War II many residents chose to stay close to their businesses while hostilities raged elsewhere; however, most residents returned home by 1945 after Japan surrendered unconditionally those days before Pearl Harbor occurred. After the war many new families moved into what had been primarily industrial areas vacated by people who had left for military service or other reasons during the war; however much still remains unchanged from earlier years with few exceptions - Incarnation Lutheran Church Complex housing current day businesses along with residences dating back to early 1900s remain an important part of local culture as does Armstrong Park which includes a playground/creek that used to be called "Noah's Ark" since it housed three hundred headless animals abandoned by farmers near Prophetstown when that area was burned off during Indian Wars

Carmel is a small town in central Indiana, United States. The population was 7,700 at the 2010 census. Carmel is the county seat of Kane County. In 1821, when Carmel was founded, it was named for the biblical city of Jerusalem. The first settlers in Carmel were Methodists from Northumberland County, England who arrived in 1824 and started a small farm near present-day Main Street and High Street. The Methodists operated a school and an orphanage until 1830 when they moved to what is now the southwest corner of First and Second Streets on land donated by Eli Whitney. They built a log cabin known as "Whitney's Station" which stood until 1902 when it was destroyed by fire. A post office called Carmel was established in 1825, and remained in operation until 1893. The community name derived from its location on the banks of the Wabash River where palmetto trees grew abundantly. In 1837, electric lights were installed in Carmel along with streetlights and other public works during the Harrison administration as part of his New Deal program. During World War II, local businesses produced munitions for the war effort including Ford Motor Company’s nearby Ridgway Arsenal plant; these activities continued after hostilities ended. After years of economic decline throughout much of the 20th century, development began to occur during the late 1990s through private investment culminating in construction of three large shopping malls that anchored Kane County’s resurgent downtown district: Whitley Center (1994), Greenfield Village (1998), and Oneida Harbor (2002). Carmel has been home to both Catholic and Protestant churches since its founding; however, Roman Catholicism remains dominant today with over 90%of residents identifying as Catholic while Protestantism makes up just 10%. As one of Kane County’s most populous communities—with an estimated population over 12,000—Carmel has long played an important role within its larger neighborings; indeed some would say that it has more blood ties to Indianapolis than any other community within Greater Indianapolis area! A number of civic organizations have been formed here over time such as Kiwanis Club International (#1 club per capita), Knights Templar #1 club per capita (second only to Stroudsburg) – alluding to its longstanding importance within religious communities as well as its many cultural events/festivals each year! One significant factor behind this longstanding culture are its rich history & heritage which can be observed throughout every inch of this vibrant town! Many people may not know this but there are several things that date back way before they even settled here- one example being their church which still stands today(albeit without services 😕) & another thing dating back even further is their claim to have been founded right here on earth by two prophets named Elijah & Moses!!!
