The first permanent settler in what would become Brownsburg was Nicholas Brown in 1800. He and his family homesteaded a piece of land on the banks of the White River, now known as East Elm Street. In 1807, John Pemberton founded Pemberton's Mill on White River Road near present-day State Road 508 and also developed a millrace that ran parallel to the river for harvesting flour from local cornfields. In 1810, James Cupp founded Cupp's Store on Indian Creek Road just north of present day Elm Street. In 1830, Daniel Boone purchased 640 acres (251 ha) along White River from Nicholas Brown for $2,000 cash and built a log cabin known as "the Hermitage." After three years of construction, he sold it to John Hull for $4,000 more than he paid for it – one of the earliest instances where money was used as an incentive to encourage settlement in this region. Hull named his new community Hullsville in honor of himself and his backers who helped finance its establishment. Hull opened up his land to farming by building ditches across it to catch runoff water from farm fields and draining swamps adjacent to his property into White River; this process created what is now known as The Hill Country neighborhood around central Brownsburg today). By 1840, over 100 families had settled here including 10 farmers who formed The First Methodist Church serving free services until 1865 when they became affiliated with larger Methodists like those in Wheaton (IL). From 1846-1848 another group organized themselves into The Second Methodist Episcopal Church which offered worshiping services at various homes until their own church building was completed in 1872 on Main Street opposite present day State Route 508/East ElmStreet from which they conducted services until 1965 when they moved out west again because they could no longer afford infrastructure costs associated with growing an urban center (a trend continued through most suburban churches throughout Illinois today). During these early days there were few schools but many people did their schooling locally or traveled downriver to Fayette County (now Michigan) or even away east where school existed only intermittently due chiefly to lack of transportation or other resources precluded large numbers of students traveling far distances during school hours simply because achieving academic excellence required travel outside their immediate geographic vicinity: “It will be remembered that under our pioneer system education was essentially self-taught save among some very select few whose parents could afford little else…. We all learned by heart things we needed knowledge about” . Consequently except for brief intervals during World War II when government sponsored military academies operated within touching distance (Vincennes University being one such instance), Brownsburg has been without formal educational institutions continuously since before 1850!
