Brownsburg is a small town in the United States. The population was 5,036 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute, Indiana Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Brownsburg" is an anglicized form of "Broomfield". The town was platted in 1827 by Major General James K. Polk and his brother-in-law, Colonel John Silliman. The first post office was established in 1830. In 1853, Brownburg became the seat of government for Hendricks County when that county was created from parts of Vigo and Posey counties. In 1902, Brownsburg became a township in Hendricks County and remained so until it ceded its jurisdiction to Terre Haute on November 1, 1909. On February 12, 1911, Brownsburg attained city status under then Indiana State law No. 472 (now known as state statute 317). On December 6 of that year voters passed a resolution ratifying the city status by an overwhelming margin (63 percent to 37 percent). Many residents had been lobbied by Mayor Augustus Dyer to become cities because they saw this as a way to avoid taxes levied on their businesses by Terre Haute officials who were also considering becoming cities themselves. At the time Brownsburg had no water system or sewer system; however it did have a public school system which operated until 1915 whenTerreHaute went through its own school district buildout and consolidation process which ultimately led to the present day school district running Brownsburg High School grades 9th-12th grade since 1916 On July 14th 1922 trustees met with mayor Dyer and selected committee members including Wm Ladd as trustees’ representative to erect a new City Hall building using proceeds from bond issue approved earlier that year which raised $5200 Mayor Dyer resigned effective September 30th 1927 due to health concerns but continued to serve on city commission until his death on October 8th 1928 . He bequeathed his home lot at 1194 N 2nd St., now home of Community First Credit Union after he died ,to help finance future city projects such as library expansion

In 1851, when a group of men from Fulton County built a mill on the river near present day Greencastle, they became the first settlers in that area and started an important industry which helped support the town until today. In 1865, during the American Civil War, Brownsburg played a significant role as an artillery battery under General Ulysses S Grant's command during his march across Kentucky into Tennessee. Aftermath of World War I led to economic decline for Brownsburg but it soon recovered after becoming part of Independents United States (IU). In 1951–1953 local officials organized what is now known as "The International Model Cities Conference" at Brownsburg which helped spur development within IU over subsequent years. Today Brownsburg is one of IU's largest towns with over 10 thousand residents; it is also home to several universities including Purdue University and Indiana State University-Purdue beltway campus

In 1865, Brownsburg became part of Union County when that county was created from parts of neighboring Posey and Vigo counties. The population began to decline after World War I and remained so until its elevation to city status in 1951.
