Brownsburg is a town in Hancock County, Indiana, United States. The population was 2,821 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Evansville–Portage City, IN-WI Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European settlers in what would become Brownsburg were Nicholas and Catharine Allerton who arrived in 1795. They soon became the owners of a large tract of land that extended from modern day Brownsburg east to near Corydon and west to present day Highland Heights. In 1814, they donated all their remaining land in Hancock County to help form what would become Evansville. In 1827, James Kapp founded the first post office in Brownsburg with nine square miles (18 hectares) of land on offer for sale. The town started as a small agricultural community with only 12 residents when it was organized as a village by an act of the Indiana General Assembly on February 14, 1830. When Kapp died in 1834 his wife sold most of her interest in the post office to John Witherspoon who served until his death on November 3, 1840; then he bequeathed it to his son James Witherspoon Jr., who served until 1865 when it passed into private hands again and finally came under state control on November 1, 1870 when it was named after Congressman Thaddeus Hennepin Ochterhouse (1837-1920). Brownsburg's early growth was due largely to its location at the junction of two important routes: one leading north from Evansville down through Hancock County; and another leading south from Portage via Corydon and Highland Heights across Ulysses S Grant Lake toward Vincennes. This strategic location helped make Brownsburg one ofIndiana’s largest towns by 1800 although its population never reached 100%. The combination of these factors – its centrality within both counties; good transportation connections via roads and railroads; easy access to markets – made Brownsburg an ideal place for businesses and families to stay while they took advantage of new opportunities opened up by riverboat travel along both banks of the Ohio River during this time period. The local merchants developed successful businesses that continue today including grocery stores, flour mills (especially those run by P&G), wagon factories (eagerly seeking supplies during times Of War), taverns/restaurants (particularly notable ones like Hardee’s), insurance companies (often doing business out-of-state), car dealerships and more!

Brownsburg had a rail depot on the Terre Haute-and-Purdue Railroad which served as its central business district until it closed operations around 1960. In recent years, Brownsburg has become known for its annual agricultural fair which features exhibits from local farmers and their products; as well as its craft beer festival which takes place each year around July 4th or 5th (depending on the year). In addition to its agricultural fair and craft beer festival, Brownsburg also has several small businesses that operate during these events such as art galleries and antique stores.
The Brownsburg post office was established on December 3, 1868, and served the town of Brownsburg until it was discontinued on May 1, 1967.
