In 1818, John Custer led his 7th Cavalry Regiment against General Crook's brigade at Whatcom Creek near present-day Greenfield Township; this event helped lead to Indian Wars throughout central Indiana and Ohio Territory. By 1830, many native Americans had left or were deported from what are today Daviess County due to Euro-American settlement policies which discriminated against them based on their ethnicity and religions – specifically Christianity which they viewed as their true faith. Brownsburg is a small town in Morgan County, Indiana, United States. The population was 2,871 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1824 by James Brown and his family. Brownsburg is located in the eastern part of Morgan County and rise above the water on an island in the river. The first settler in what would become Brownsburg was James Brown, who arrived there with his family on June 4, 1824. The town site was surveyed by Captain John Richardson on July 10, 1825. On October 3, 1827, James Brown married Meg Whitman and they moved to the town site from Pawcatuck Township near Dunkirk. In 1830 settlers Isaac Sibley and Ebenezer Higgins erected a log cabin on the south side ofriver where they became known as "The Hens." In 1830-31 Wm Burch built a sawmill onthe west side of river which became known as "The Mills". In 1832 Fergus McCormick settled around the millrace which he named after his father Fenelon McCormick (1792-1864). He also raised corn and beans for sale to local farmers until 1840 when he began manufacturing candles at his factory on Main Street between State and Third Streets. By 1850 Brownsburg had 7 stores including one operated by Jno Ladd (who had obtained letters patent from President George Washington for this enterprise). The mills closed during reconstruction following American Civil War but reopened soon after Reconstruction ended. Afterward Brownsburg experienced rapid growth with new construction taking place such as a schoolhouse (1868), post office (1870), gristmill (1875), church (1877), store building(1904), livery stable(1907-08) and hospital (1920). Residents developed good relationships with their neighboring towns developing what would become known as "the friendly system." Many residents were members of various social organizations including the Methodist Church which still meets today in downtown Brownsburg. A variety of businesses flourished during this time including agriculture such as raising hogs (), cattle (), grain (), etc., retailing items such as groceries (), clothiers () or stone masons (); service industries such as carpentry (), blacksmithing () or engineering (); professional services; and many residences becoming multi-family dwellings (). One example is John Pumper's three story brick home located east of main street which served as offices for several businesses over its years of operation (). Another example is Mrs Beeson's two story brick house north of main street which housed her grocery until it burned down in 1928().
