One of the first tasks of this department was to provide uniforms and other equipment to the local militia. In 1814, General David Logan created a new branch within the Indiana Army called "the Model Military Regiment." This regiment served under General John Pope during his campaign against Native Americans in 1814. In addition, this regiment donated two cannons to King James II of England for use during that year's war against Napoleon Bonaparte. These donations helped improve relations between France and Great Britain at a time when these nations were locked in conflict. During World War I, members from both branches of the National Guard fought together on different fronts throughout Europe. After World War I ended, many soldiers from these units returned home to serve their country once more. Some soldiers even decided to stay behind and help form new divisions or brigades within the military after their discharge from service. Today, members of both branchesofthe National Guard serve our country proudly and contribute materially to our society through their service in uniform or as volunteers. The National Guard of Indiana was organized on December 21, 1917. The state's first unit was the 158th Infantry Regiment, which arrived in Bloomington on February 15, 1918. The regiment was redesignated the 111th Infantry Regiment and placed into federal service on October 14, 1918. It served in France until May 1945. In 1919, the regiment was redesignated again as the 574th Infantry Regiment and assigned to the Illinois National Guard. The regiment served in Illinois until September 1946 when it moved to Minnesota and then Iowa before being stationed at Fort Snelling in Minneapolis from 1951-1957 and then at Rock Island Arsenal from 1957-1963. On October 1, 1964, the 574th Infantry Regiment reorganized under battalion command with a headquarters company ( Headquarters Company A), a signals company (Company B), an artillery company (Company C), a nurse corps detachment (Nurse Corps Detachment A), and an airmobile detachment (Airmobile Detachment A). On November 16, 1966, Company D became an independent unit while Headquarters Company A became Headquarters Battalion of the 111th Infantry Regiment. On January 1st 1972 Companies E & F were added as part of Battalion HQs' reorganization following troop reductions within Army Reserve Command resulting frombone marrow transplantations for soldiers in Vietnam; these companies were disbanded on July 31st 1972 when their battalions were combined into Brigade HQs known as County battalions which functioned as garrison units only within counties while brigade elements deployed countywide or touristed with temporary detachments to support theater operations) As part of its mission of guarding State government properties including schools and other public buildings located outside of Bloomington city limits both local police forces supplemented by members / officers/equipment - originally called 'National Guardsmen' but more commonly referred to simply as Guardsmen - also operated throughout much of central Indiana including Indianapolis providing law enforcement services primarily during night hours
Bloomington, Indiana is a city in the U.S. state of Indiana and the county seat of Van Buren County. The population was 17,853 at the 2010 census.
