Bloomington, Indiana is a city located in the U.S. state of Indiana and is the capital of the Hoosier State. The population was 61,534 at the 2010 census, making it the largest city in Michigan's upper Peninsula. Bloomington has been nicknamed "The University City" due to its many educational institutions and businesses that have origins dating back to 1847. Founded as a village on December 14, 1824 by Michael Croll and Joseph Croll, Bloomington absorbed two other villages - North Bloomington and West Bloomfield - on January 1, 1829. On February 15, 1830, John Prentice became the first Mayor of Bloomington after being elected from Township No. 3 (now part of Indianapolis). That same year also saw the founding of what would become Purdue University with then-President James Logan providing $10,000 for an agricultural school at what is now Foundry Square downtown. In 1831–32 architect Daniel Burnham designed and constructed what is now Old Main building on adjacent White Street for Purdue University; this structure served as both the first university campus inside of Indiana and also as America's first intercollegiate collegiate sports venue when it hosted games between Rutgers College (then Newark) and Princeton University in December 1840 – one of only three such contests played outdoors around then-America (the others were played at Nassau Hall on Long Island). In 1865–66 IU alumnus Eli Lilly donated land along First Avenue south of Marsh Road for use as a science park; this site eventually became IU Health Care System's downtown area today known as The Lawns. In 1886–87 IU graduate Morton Hirsch submitted plans for what wouldbecome Memorial Stadium – now home to both football (now called Purdue Boilermakers football) and soccer (later renamed USMNT) teams – but these plans were not accepted until after his death in 1946 due to financial problems caused by World War II veteran shortages within academia during wartime times. In 1924 IU student body voted unanimously to create a Student Union; this union later morphed into modernIU Athletics when it was created by statute in 1949 following passage of UI Senate Resolution 468 that said "athletic programs atIU shall be conducted under one roof."
