Bloomington is a city in Indiana, United States. The population was $96,512 at the 2010 census. Bloomington is the largest city in the smaller county of Marion County. The two cities are adjacent and share a border on three sides. The first Europeans to visit what is now Bloomington were French explorers in 1674 who named it "Bouillonville". It was founded as a small trading post by French fur traders Nicholas-Jacques Conte and Étienne Brûlé. In 1785, the day after General George Rogers Clark's column came through Indiana on his way to Yale University, an armed band of men burned down the trading post and looted all that was taken with them. For many years, Bloomington was known as "the Blaze of brass" because of its long supply of brass cannons from British forces during the American Revolution. After being annexed by Indianapolis in 1836, Bloomington began to grow rapidly as an agricultural center due to its rich soil and accessible waterways. A canal was built connecting Indianapolis and Chicago for transportation purposes, which led to increased business for merchants in Bloomington. Although railroads arrived late in this period, they did not do much until after World War II when they became essential for moving goods inland during wartime shortages abroad. In 1916–17, local businessmen organized a campaign to get recognition from the state government for having one of only two high schools open in Indiana (the other being Fort Wayne). This campaign failed but paved the way for future successes such as building more than 100 libraries statewide and becoming one of America's leading higher education centers In 1958–59, then-Mayor John Hynes appointed Everett Waddell as first African American mayor of Indianapolis after winning an election runoff against incumbent James Fenton III following accusations that Waddell had racially motivated traffic tickets issued against white drivers while he was still mayor of Indianapolis . Waddell served two terms before retiring from public life in 1966; he died soon afterwards at age 92 . Waddell's appointment made possible advances within IU central campus that would not have been possible without his leadership over four decades – including construction achievements such as world-renowned Hoosier Stadium (now known as Lucas Oil Stadium), new housing developments downtown callednilson Park South and North (now part of Old Town) and Ohlone Terracewhich opened up large areas near north side campus eastward into town center
