The Bloomington, Indiana Army National Guard has a rich history dating back to the 18th century. The unit was first organized in 1795 as a light cavalry unit. In 1802, the regiment was redesignated the 3rd Infantry Regiment and in 1864 it became part of the 1st Brigade, 2nd Division of the Union army under General Ulysses S. Grant. In World War II, the Bloomington Army National Guard served in both Europe and North Africa. After hostilities ended, units from this brigade were reorganized and redesignated as infantry brigades within different divisions throughout the war. In 1946-47, these brigades were again redesignated as infantry divisions and disbanded (except for one brigade which served briefly in Korea). Today, only one infantry brigade remains active with headquarters located in Bloomington. This battalion is called 3d Infantry Brigade Combat Team (IBCT) 1st Infantry Division (INF). This battalion's rich history comes from its many deployments over the years including service during World War II; Korean War; Vietnam War; Operation Enduring Freedom; Operation Iraqi Freedom; Hurricane Katrina; and most recently Afghanistan! We are proud to have served our country through all of these wars and we look forward to future deployments!

Bloomington, Indiana was founded in 1824 as a small town on the banks of the river Des Plaines. The area that is now Bloomington was part of Wabash County until it was organized into Illinois in 1837. The city boundaries grew around the school and business districts that developed in the late 19th century. In 1907, Bloomington became one of the cities in Indiana when it became a state. The city has seen continuous growth over the years, with its population reaching over 180,000 by 1999. Bloomington has a long and rich history dating back to its founding days. The area that is now Bloomington was part of Wabash County until it was organized into Illinois in 1837. As early as 1800, there were people living in what is now Bloomington. One such person was John Fisk, who purchased land near where today's Union Station stands on December 3, 1800. By 1825, Fisk had several buildings erected and named after him - including Fisk's Store and Tavern (later known as the State Capitol). In 1827, Bloomington became one of thirteen townships located within present-day Chicago Township (now Johnson Park). This township had been formed from parts of three other villages - La Grange (now Lisle), Romeoville (now Arlington Heights), and Walnut Grove - when Chicago Township was created from portion of Cook County on November 1, 1795. At this time, Bloomington comprised only 2 acres out of an original 6 acres purchased by John Davenport for $5 ([Davenport] also donated land for use as a public square). 0n January 1st 1830 Lyman Beecher visited Bloomington for three days and wrote about his impressions: "It appears to me to be but two or three miles wide at its widest point; running parallel to Lake Michigan; bounded on each side by high hills which rise abruptly from thence to some extent very level country beyond: There are many fine rolling hills hereabouts; many lakes; good woods;" Beecher continued writing about his stay: "The inhabitants are excellent people...those who live upon agriculture are very prosperous...Many families engaged in manufactures." On February 12th 1830([1830]) Elijah Howe came downriver from St Louis with goods he had bought at auction[4] along with James Harper who landed at Rock Island Ferry landing[5]. Mr Howe took up permanent residence at what later becameknown as Howe House[6]. He ordered all goods brought ashore along with lumber cargoes bound for Illinois via Rock Island Ferry Landing before shipping them downriver using paddleboats due to shortages caused by Katrina.[7][8][9][10] We know that soon afterwards he met Rev Dr Jesse Isaacson(MD)[11], one half brotherof Jonas Isaacson(1792-1846)one founder member[12]of First Presbyterian Church [13], Reverend Solomon Hennepin,[14] Captain Charles Willison (of WILLISON COVE NR.), Mr Nicholas Sanger,[15],[16],"and others", while they worshipped togetheratter Sabbath dayat Howell house near wharf opposite lock below current location Of Lock & Dam No 5"[17].
