In 1837, James Waring purchased 640 acres (240 ha) of land east of present-day Beech Grove from Nicholas Biddle for $15 per acre. He named this tract “Waring” after himself and his brother-in-law Andrew Waring Jr., both of whom had helped carry out President George Washington's crossing over the Delaware River on November 12, 1776. The original village site lay northwest of what is now the intersection of State Road 30 andState Road 219 today known as “Old State Road 30”; it included only a few scattered farmhouses before it was moved about 2 miles (3 km) to its current location by developers in 1957 when State Highway 80 was designated concurrent with SR 29 along its then course throughBeach Grove creating an almost direct line between Evansville and Fayetteville civic areas). In 1802, they founded the Beech Grove Baptist Church which became one of the largest Baptist churches in Indiana. The church had a Sunday school, a belfry and a meeting house. It also traded with other nearby villages for goods and services. The Griggs family left Beech Grove around 1815 when their farm was sold to Isaac Prentice and Jesse Dayton from Royalton Township. They build a new home on their current site where they lived until 1829 when they sold it to Elijah Pickering Jr.. They then moved to what is now Ottawa Township where they lived until their death in 1865. In 1898, Beech Grove had 1,500 residents and it was reported as "the most thriving village west of Indianapolis". However, during Prohibition efforts several businesses closed including "The Bottle Shop" which did business from 1897-1920 because no alcohol could be bought without going through customs agents; "Lawn Mowers", which ceased operations in 1916; "George's Attraction" (now known as George's Pizza), which closed its doors for good on December 7th 1920; "Jenny's Nursery", an early 20th century grocery store that reopened after prohibition but failed to make sales after repeal; and "Casa Grande Italian Restaurant & Bakery", which closed its doors on October 9th 1951 due to high competition from local supermarkets such as Kroger and Sam’s Club at that time). A post office called Beech Grove was established in 1802, but it never took off and disbanded soon after being opened due to low demand from locals/patients/workers alike.
