However, over time, the regiment grew to include soldiers from across central Indiana. In 1861, the brigade within the National Guard was renamed as the 2nd Brigade ofthe 1st Division ofthe United States Army under command of General Winfield Scott Hancock. The brigade later became part of Brigade Commanders 2nd Infantry Division which eventually became 3rd Infantry Division during World War II.
Beech Grove is a small town in the state of Indiana, United States. The population was 5,494 at the 2010 census. It is part of the larger Beech Grove–St. Joseph County metropolitan area. The community was founded in 1872 by Methodist Episcopal missionaries who named it after Beech Creek Township in Clay County, Kentucky, which they had just arrived in on a visit. The founders were led by Reverend John Witherspoon and his wife Lucy Witherspoon. They built a log cabin and started a school for children six years old and under on land donated from Mr. & Mrs. Charles Burtch of Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. In 1875, they laid out a new town with two blocks long and one block wide streets that are still in use today as Main Street (north), State Street (south), Custom House Road (west) and Fourth Street (east). The first post office was opened at Beech Grove on Main Street on October 16, 1876; it was operated by Miss Lillie Hutton until her death on May 6, 1935. In 1898, when Beech Grove became an independent village through an act of the General Assembly of Indiana, it voted to change its name to Cedar Rapids because "Cedar Rapids seemed too far away." In 1907 Cedar Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce decided that “Beech Grove” should be changed back to Cedar Rapids so as not to compete with their own organization’s name change request made two years earlier for “River Falls” because “the river looked more like [the] falls than [Beech Grove] did”([1]). A vote was held in early 1908 to adopt the suggestion made by chamber president Averil Hinton that “Prairie du Chien” be chosen instead since this would have been less likely to cause confusion among residents living near both towns ([2]). This decision marked the beginning of what would become known as The Beechgrove Years – during which time Cedar Rapids Area Chamber OF commerce served as both governing body for Beech Grove Village while also maintaining close ties with its namesake town throughout much of its history[3].
