Beech Grove is a small town in central Indiana, United States. The population was 2,531 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dearborn Heights, Indiana Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in Beech Grove were farmers who arrived around 1785. By 1810, the community had a courthouse and two stores. The population grew rapidly after 1830 when a canal was built through the community and it became an agricultural center with land for farming, logging and manufacturing. In 1849, Beech Grove became a railway junction with four other communities in Indiana – Terre Haute, Bloomington-Normal, Elkhart Lake and Westville – creating what is now known as the Midwest Region of America. In 1870–71, Beech Grove also became home to one of the first schools in that area when Drury High School opened its doors on Main Street. Beech Grove experienced significant growth during World War II as many residents turned their attention to the war effort. In 1942, Beech Grove joined forces with nearby Terre Haute to form Camp Morton which served as Headquarters for General Dwight D Eisenhower's Allied Expeditionary Force during Operation Overlord. It wasn't until 1980 that BeechGrove finally lost its status as a separate municipality when it merged into Dearborn Heights
Beech Grove is a town in and the county seat of Beech Grove County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,530 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what is now Beech Grove was Nicholas Brown and his family who arrived on May 15, 1814 from Palmyra Township, New York. They named their new home "Beech Grove" after a small beech tree near their farmstead. In 1828, John Aiken bought property in the village and built a log cabin which served as the first courthouse in Beech Grove County. The first post office was established in1829 at the sawmill by Nicholas Brown's son-in-law David Greenfield. In 1831, James Covington settled on land opposite present day Beech Grove Village and built a two story wood frame house with large outside steps leading to it which became known as "the White House." In 1835, Isaac Crane moved to Beech Grove from Lebanon Township and started an agricultural experiment station on his farm that remains one of today's most important agricultural institutions in BeechGrove County today. In 1840, Samuel Hennepin organized what became known as the "Hennepin National Forest" within BeechGrove County; this forest would eventually encompass over 27 thousand acres (11%) of central Indiana farmland including much of what is now Beech Grove Village and parts of other townships throughout BeECH GroVE COUNTY! This forested land included some valuable timberlands that remain today! A post office called Westfield was established at present day Westfield on October 6th 1850 by Jno Ewing Wells with seven votes against but it closed due to lack of customers when opened! On September 11th 1861 around 100 people gathered at Greenfields Storehouse where they elected George Stephenson (then Postmaster) to become their first Postmaster! For more than 60 years until its closure (2003), Easton had been serving as our only Post Office making it one of many historic milestones associated with our community during that time! On February 26th 1907 Wm Fenton opened up his general store next door to Greenfields Storehouse which later became known as Griggs Drugstore & Grill afterwards! Over time we've added several taverns/restaurants along our main street such as Noodle Junction (opened 1959), Country Western Cafe(opened 1984), Little Italy Catering(opened 2006) & Southern Belle Diner(open 2009). Today we carry nearly every imaginable item you could possibly imagine !!
