The land that now makes up Bedford was first settled by Native Americans in the early 1800s. A post office called Bedford was established in 1822, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. The town began to form around the intersection of two general stores, which were founded by George Stephenson and his brother James Hammond. The store owners named their business after their hometown of Bedford, England. In 1850, a schoolhouse and Methodist church were built within the town limits; they were both destroyed by fire in 1871. However, a new schoolhouse and Methodist church were completed within the same year and remain standing today. In 1911, an industrial park was developed near where Bedford now stands; this area would later become known as "Thebarton." At its peak during World War II (1944-45), the plant produced munitions for the U.S. military. The plant closed down following the war but reopened several years later as an auto dealership; it continued to operate into the present day until it closed again in 1990. Today, Bedford remains a small town with a population of just over 5,431 people spread out over 3 square miles (8 km²). Its main street has one stoplight while most residents live on small farms or scattered throughout other villages and townships located within Lafayette-Etna Census Areas including: Lyndhurst Township (includes parts of Lebanon County), Greencastle Township (includes parts of Howard County), Petersburg Township (includes parts of Delaware County), East Brookfield Township (includes part of Clinton County), South Bend Township ( includes parts of Kosciusko County), West Bloomfield Township (includes parts of St Joseph County).

Bedford is a town in Crawford County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,749 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1824 as a place name given to John Bedford by General David Wilkinson. Bedford is named after Bedford Parish, Louisiana. In 1825, General David Wilkinson and his army were moving eastward from Canada when they came across the Delaware River Valley and saw what he thought was an Indian village on the other side. He ordered his artillerymen to bombard the village without knowing who or what it was for. The shells that exploded created a number of small hills which still stand today in Bedford Township. The town got its start when James Aiken built a store and hotel on State Street in 1826. The first post office opened in 1830 and became known as "Bedford." In 1834, the canal was completed which allowed for more traffic to flow into the community and made it easier for people to get around. By 1840, there were four stores, two hotels, three churches, one schoolhouse and over 100 residents in Bedford Township. The canal also brought about new industries such as tanning and shoe manufacturing which continued until the 1800s when those businesses went out of business due to competition from larger cities like Chicago (which had started up at that time). In 1850, most of Bedford Township including present-day Paris Township were organized into Crawford County under territorial government following the Northwest Territory annexation by Mexico of America Act of 1798. On November 15th of that year, Abraham Lincoln was elected President of Mexico resulting in Americanization policies taking hold throughout much of Southwestern America including Mexican territory with exception of Texas where plantation owner's could remain legal citizens even though they resided within Mexican territory subject only to certain rules & regulations set forth by their respective governments - this policy being dubbed 'Lincolnistan'.
