Bedford is a city in and the county seat of Bedford County, Indiana, United States. The population was 9,362 at the 2010 census. The first settlement in what is now Bedford County was made by George Washington and his family on October 8, 1795. It was near where Fort Wayne now stands. Indian Removal began in 1827 and by 1830 all of this land had been acquired by the United States government as part of the treaty with the Sauk Nation. In 1854, when Mexico gained independence from Spain, it ceded much of what is now Bedford County to the United States; that same year also saw the founding of Indianapolis. In 1881, following a referendum attended by residents of all but one township in Bedford County (Crawford Township voted against), Bedford became an unincorporated community within Hamilton Township. On July 1, 1907, it became a town under statehood when New Albany won its bid for statehood over Terre Haute. The original town limits were 1 mile wide and extended south to I-465 just east of present day Greenwood Avenue; however they were reduced to their current boundaries after annexation by Terre Haute in 1911. On July 1, 1951 (the day before Indiana's admission into Confederation as a new nation), Bedford became an incorporated city with a population of 25 people according to the US Census Bureau data available then; however its charter stated that “ bedford shall have no more than 20 full-time citizens” so it never achieved 100% incorporation status until 1953 when it reached that number through merger with other cities within its municipal boundaries including Crawfordsville and Westfield/Eastfield which both had populations over 50 people at that time).
