The first permanent settler in what is now Bedford County was David Wilkinson in 1810. The town of Bedford was founded in 1816 by John Fenton and others as a station on the newly created road from Fort Wayne to Lawrenceburg. Development began around this time with taverns and groceries being established along the route. In 1824, the village of Bedford was incorporated as a town under state law. The community rapidly grew due to its railroad access and its location near major transportation hubs including Indianapolis and Louisville. In 1850, the first school building was erected in Bedford Village; it served until 1907 when a new school building became necessary due to growing population sizes within town limits. By 1870, there were over 50 businesses operating within town limits with 3 churches serving residents. A cotton gin was built west of downtown in 1880 which provided employment for many local people during this time period; it continued operation until 1971 when it closed after severe damage caused by an oil spillage incident nearby In 1906, an act providing for Prohibition led to increased crime rates throughout Indiana; as a result, anti-alcoholic sentiment soared among Bedford citizens leading to stricter enforcement against drinking vices in early 1907 The cotton gin closed because of poor management after years of use which caused extensive damage; however, it reopened shortly thereafter as a museum operated by the Bedfordsville Historical Society In 1954–55, female students from Peru High School moved into old buildings on Main Street (now Dooley Street) following passage of legislation creating girls’ schools throughoutIndiana . They opened their doors for instruction on October 1st that year .
