Bedford, Indiana is a small city in the southernmost part of the U.S. state of Indiana and is the county seat of Bedford County. The population was 21,827 at the 2010 census. It is bordered on the south by Pennsylvania and on the north by LaGrange County. It is one of five cities in Carroll County which are each also considered a townhips within their respective counties. In 1814, a group of farmers founded Bedford as an agricultural community based on land they had acquired from John Fordyce. By 1860, Bedford had 1,500 residents and was known for its blacksmithing shops and cotton mills; however, these industries declined during the 20th century due to competition from larger towns in neighboring Carroll County. In 2000, Bedford became home to Purdue University's Wabash Valley campus after it was purchased by Purdue University from Bethlehem Steel Corporation with $25 million in cash and 712 acres (269 hectares) of land. The university has since developed several buildings within the city limits including its own hospital and mosque/mall complex which fronts onto River Street near downtown; as well as new research facilities such as a materials science lab housed inside an old steel mill building that has been converted into a learning center for undergraduate students; and an indoor soccer stadium used by both college teams (the Boilermakers play at Memorial Stadium while IUPUI plays their home games at nearby Lucas Oil Stadium). Bedford's rich history includes two battles fought here in 1814: one against Native Americans led by Tecumseh and another against United States forces under General Anthony Wayne that resulted in American victory over Indian forces at Putnam Creek Bridge over Big Branch River
