Today, the Coast Guard maintains relationships with its community partners through both ceremonial and operational activities. Bedford, Indiana is a small town located in the eastern part of the state of Indiana. The population was 2,868 at the 2010 census. Bedford is one of the oldest villages in Indiana and has been known for its agriculture and manufacturing industries since it was founded in 1825. In recent years, Bedford has become a center for education and research due to its location within close proximity to many universities and major research institutions. Bedford has a rich history that can be traced back to 1825 when two men named Nicholas Merrill and Samuel Pryor started farming land around the village of Bedford. By 1830, Bedford had a population of about 100 people. The first school in Bedford was built in 1829 and taught basic reading, writing, arithmetic, geometry, algebraic equations, principles of trigonometry and navigation. In 1840, an addition was added to the school building which housed a store and later became known as the “Pryor House” after Samuel Pryor who donated both money and land for this purpose. The early days of Bedford were difficult because there were no roads or transportation available to transportation workers or residents outside of town. This situation changed when Richard McCoy brought his horse-drawn wagon service into town from nearby Terre Haute on November 3rd, 1847. This new service allowed residents living outside of town access to local goods without having toleave their homes multiple times each day to go shopping or fetch food from inside their homes. The popularity of this new service quickly led to increased business traffic for the merchants in town as well as more residents wanting access to what new services McCoy had introduced intotowns across central Indiana! In 1850, Abraham Lincoln came through centralIndiana on his way upstate towards Springfield during his inaugural event on January 6th; he stopped at Bedford on his way northward! This event marked the beginning of heavy industry coming into town from neighboring states such as Illinois; this along with improved transportation options spurred greater development throughout post-Civil War America! By 1870,Bedford had over 1200 inhabitants with over 50 businesses operating within its borders! During this time period also saw significant growth in educational opportunities withinthe community with three schools being built: one elementary (1873), one high school (1875),and eventually two colleges (1901) – all located within walking distanceof each other!
When the first coast guard was organized, they were not very able to provide for their own needs. In 1907, a group of businessmen found a way to create a separate coast guard department within the Department of Navigation and Marine Affairs. This new department would be able to provide more services for the public and could also purchase supplies and equipment necessary for their duties. The first coast guard gift was given in 1913 when Capt. Edward Fenton donated an oil lamp to help with navigation during night times. From then on, gifts from citizens became more common as the Coast Guard grew in popularity. In 1827, Bedford became a part of the Indiana Territory. In 1848, the township was redesignated as Bedford County. The county was created from parts of Vigo and Putnam counties on November 3, 1857. On January 1, 1861, Bedford County was merged into Butler County.
