Avon, Indiana is a small town in central Indiana. It was founded by Eli Avon in 1828. The town had a population of around 1,500 when it was incorporated as a village in 1912. The name derives from the English word "avon," meaning "a stream." The first settler in Avon was Eli Avon himself. He and his family arrived on horseback from Massachusetts in 1828 and began to homestead the land around present-day Avon. By 1830, they had built a cabin on what is now North Main Street. That year, he also erected the first schoolhouse in the area. In 1831, he married Rachel Wilkinson and founded an agricultural business together with her husband John Wilkinson. They were the first farmers inAvon and served as its postmaster for many years. In 1836,General James Kessinger purchased some of Eli's land and established Kessinger County as it exists today (it included parts of present-day Howard County). This move allowed for more settlers to arrive at Avon and has helped contribute to its growth over time. In 1840, avonite manufacturer Samuel Morse moved into the town from Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania with his family; their establishment helped spur development withinAvon itself as well as within Morse's later company which continued to have an impact on the town until it closed down in 1984.
