The history of the United States Army gift shop begins with the Spanish-American War. In 1918, Avon, Indiana native and soldier George Fenton founded The Greeting Card Shop in his home. For the next twelve years, he operated the shop out of his home while serving in the military. During World War I, The Greeting Card Shop became an essential part of army morale by carrying cards for soldiers overseas. After The Greeting Card Shop closed during World War II due to lack of business, George Fenton reopened it as a store solely dedicated to selling military gifts. In 1951, The GreetingCardShop was purchased by retired Major General Harry Wolkowski who continued to operate it as a one-man show until his death in 1983. From then on until 1991 when owner Rick Reitlinger sold it to David Ladd, Store operations were managed by Assistant Sergeant (now Captain) Bill Bauer who served as Manager from 1991-1996 and 1997-2002. In 2003, after 16 years of continuous operation under new management, The Greetings Card Shop was moved from its original location on Pine Street into its current space at 4307 E Central Ave., within walking distance of many Avon businesses and services. Today’s Management Team includes Owner Rick Reitlinger’s wife Pam and Assistant Sergeant (now Captain) Bill Bauer; Owner/Operator Rick Reitlinger himself; Second Lieutenant Randy Ziegler (Retired)); Sergeant First Class John Bourgeois (Retired); and Mrs. Rick Reitlinger (Owner). The history of the United States Army in Avon, Indiana goes back to 1812. The first American military unit in this area was Company A, Independents, which was organized on September 3, 1812. The company served under the command of Maj. Gen. James Wilkinson until it disbanded on December 8, 1813. On October 14, 1861, Company K (3rd U.S.) was reactivated at Fort Granger and served with distinction during the Civil War. It was disbanded on January 9, 1865 after three years of service. In 1907 the 4th Infantry Regiment (later 1st Infantry) was activated at Fort Dodge and participated in World War I as part of the 9th Infantry Division; it became inactive after the war ended and its members were scattered throughout America. On October 14, 1921 a new regiment called 2nd/9th Cavalry Regiment (2nd Cavalry) was activated at Ft Wayne; it served as an infantry unit until being converted to cavalry in 1925 and becoming part of Seventh Cavalry Group commanded by Lt.-Gen., Brevet Col., James Meehan Jr.. In 1936 a third regiment called 5th/7th Cavalry Regiment (5th Cavalry) also arrived at Ft Wayne from Illinois; this regiment served as an infantry unit until being converted to cavalry in 1954 and becoming part of Fourth Cavalry Group commanded by Lt.-Gen., Brevet Col., John Wickersham Jr.. In 1957 a fourth regiment called 9th Armored Brigade Combat Team also arrived at Ft Wayne from Illinois; this brigade served as an armored brigade combat team until being redesignated 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team on November 1, 1991 whenunit became Second Armored Brigade Combat Team based at Indianapolis).
