Auburn, Indiana is a small town in central Hoosier County, Indiana, United States. The population was 3,281 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Terre Haute–Evans metropolitan area. Auburn is one of the most northern towns in Indiana and has a latitude of 42°5′ N and longitude of 8°14′ W. The name "Auburn" means "(place) on the AAA topographic map." The post office for Auburn was first established in 1837. The village was founded by men from New Albany, Ohio who were driving cattle to Fort Wayne. They named their new community after General David Ralston's headquarters at Auburn Hill on the east side of Indianapolis. In 1852, Jno.[?] Silloway donated land to form what would become downtown Auburn. By 1865, all but one house had been built and it became known as "the Best Place to Live." Downtown Auburn soon became a thriving center for trade and industry with shoe manufacturing being the mainstay until about 1920 when automobiles began taking over as biggest industry in town. Development continued through World War II with businesses such as Ford Motor Company and Allied Signal Corporation moving into downtown during that time period; however, due to plant closings during that time period downtown development petered out beginning around 1970-1980s proverbial "downtuff."[1] In recent years there have been several efforts underway to revive downtown Auburn including: 1) construction of a new library/community center adjacent to CenturyLink Field 2) redevelopment of existing properties surrounding Main Street 3) establishment of an economic development corporation which will spearhead various initiatives Downtown 4) establishment of a new art museum within walking distance
