Auburn, Indiana is a small town in eastern Indiana. The population was 2,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. The first time Auburn was mentioned in writing was in 1814 when it was spelled "Auburn." In 1818, the name recognition for this small town had increased enough that General David Wilkinson recorded his visit to this community with the following account: "I passed through Auburn today and found it an agreeable place; every body here seems very friendly and contented." In 1824, Colonel John Brown purchased land east of Auburn from Hugh Mercer. This land would become known as Brown's Hill. The original schoolhouse which stood on what is now Brown's Hill burned down in 1862 but a new one was built soon afterwards. In 1830, Reverend James Witherspoon arrived to preach at Auburn and he founded the First Methodist Church there. He would stay until 1840 when he moved to Terre Haute,Indiana to take over another church there. Mrs Witherspoon continued to serve as rector at Auburn until her death in 1865. Reverend Witherspoon's ashes were interred at the churchyard after his death on October 3rd of that year. When Union troops occupied Southern Indiana during the American Civil War (1861-9), many residents fled across state lines into adjacent Illinois or Michigan Territory because they did not want warring factions within their own homes and communities. Many of these people settled near Carbondale, Illinois where they organized into a nucleus called "Theethnic Germans" who still live there today despite having left their Midwest home more than 50 years ago! Some of those early pioneers brought with them their farming skills which helped build what becomes known as "Auburn Mills". Today just a few acres remain within city limits while much of its buildings have been replaced by businesses or apartments since then! This milling industry became so important that Wheelock & Co.,makers of high quality white lead ore balls for batteries (the first patent application for such a product being filed in 1892) located their furnaces and marketing office on nearby White Sands Road between White Sands Lake and Carbondale! They began making lead sulfate balls without reducing acid by referring customers back to Auburn mills where they could buy goods made fresh each day! Lead production quickly outgrew diesels so Wheelock turned primary production facilities(today’s A&P grocery store) into blast furnace smelters before closing operations altogether due to lack of market demand four decades later! That same decade saw other heavy industrial growth including cereal manufacturing starting up along White Sands Road northeast of Carbondale before expanding all the way northward into present day Hammondsville/Muncie County - only two miles from downtown Auburn! By 1925 local aluminum producers were complaining about shortages resulting from growing export demand caused by World War I; however no antitrust action followed until 1938 when Bethlehem Steel Corporation leased older United Mine Workers Local No 4 mine property southeast of town for additional aluminum production... [Today] we can see evidence both old brownstone brick buildings on Main Street opposite Old Mill Pond dating back more than 100 years now newly restored including ladies room addition complete with foyer leading outside; also most recent building added recently associated with business park adjacent Stillwater Mall shopping center www .auburnindiana .com

Auburn, Indiana is a small town in central Indiana. It was founded in 1824 by Nicholas Applegate and his family. The original settlers were Quakers from Pennsylvania. In 1850, theApplegate family donated land to Auburn for a public square. The first school in Auburn was built on this square in 1851. The town's first post office opened in 1853. In 1912, Auburn became part of the newly created state of Indiana. In 1925, the old courthouse was moved to its present location and used as a community center until it was destroyed by fire in 2006. Today, the building serves as the library for Auburn. The history of Auburn began with Nicholas Applegate and his family who migrated from Pennsylvania circa 1824. They set up shop near what is now downtown Indianapolis and started trading goods they caught on their journey down south into what is now central Indiana long before any other settlements existed hereabouts! Hosiery manufacturing played an important role early on here with many residents working at local mills or taking jobs at surrounding farms while still attending church services every morning! Many interesting things happened during these early years such as: Reverend John Stephenson coming to preach here shortly after traveling all over America preaching revivalistic sermons; General James Harned leading an army across country during the Mexican-American War; pioneer Drayton Westbrook moving into this area from Kentucky around 1830 when he discovered rich coal seams underneath ground that would soon become mainstay industry for Auburn! It wasn't until about 1850 when someone decided it would be a good idea to build a public square between downtown Indianapolis and our current day school district Headquarters (now known as "The Commons" - which incidentally also houses our annex store). This squares located just east of today's High School boundaries served as both business headquarters for many businesses/inns/pubs along 3rd Street North within walking distance of each other back then & continues to do so today especially during Oktoberfest events occurring right outside our front door :) those days were definitely different though some great people did pioneering work here like Rev John Stephenson who preached revivalist sermons teenage girls were taught how to embroider & darn clothes back then too... even if you couldn't afford one of those fancy new dresses made nowadays folks sometimes had to put up with patched jeans or worse! lol Anyway Rev Stephenson arrived & started classes teaching Sunday school outdoors on pretty much every available open space around town resulting in quite an uproar (& laughter) because what could grownups know better than preachers? So I guess we can say that Reverend Stephenson paved the way for later generations including Lloyd Saunders who ran J&J’s Bakery which graced us with fresh donuts for many years starting right after WW II ended thru most recent owner Rich Doherty who closed Placebo Donuts last year 😞 all hailRevJohnStephenson’s Legacy 🎉
