Auburn, Indiana is a small town located in Butler County, Indiana. The population was 2,542 at the 2010 census. Auburn is the county seat of Butler County and the largest community in Butler County by population. Auburn was founded on December 12, 1814 by Captain John Fenton and his family from near Morgantown, West Virginia. The first post office was established in Auburn on November 7, 1815. In 1830, James Hargerick built a log cabin in what is now downtown Auburn and became the first settler of what would become Auburn Township. In 1836, Colonel John Mifflin established Fort Mifflin on the east bank of the Chicago River opposite present-day Mount Pleasant. The fort served as an important military outpost during the Black Hawk War between 1837 and 1840 and also helped to train future Indian fighters for war against United States forces. The surrounding agricultural land proved too valuable to be developed as a farming community and instead became an important site for manufacturing during the early 20th century both within Auburn Township Limits and across neighboring McLean County. In 1925, local residents voted to name their town after former president George Washington Carver (1871-1941). At that time only two other U.S. cities had been named after famous Americans: Philadelphia (1776) and Baltimore (1832). In 1969, Mayor Clyde Riggs proposed naming all of Butler County's 23 townships after historical figures or themes such as agriculture or military service with no single township receiving more than three namesakes per year. On July 4th of that year - just one year after Carver's namesake town had its own ordinance designating it "Washington" - all but one township in Butler County received this designation including Auburn which selected "Carver." Today there are over 50 Townships Named After Famous Americans in Butler County!
