Anderson, Indiana is a small town in the U.S. state of Indiana. It is located in the southern portion of Howard County and is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. The population was 9,517 at the 2010 census. The first Europeans to visit Anderson were French traders and missionaries who traveled through what is now Anderson in 1679-80. In 1785, pioneers from Illinois founded a log cabin community on land that became known as Green Township (now Anderson). By 1800, there were 10 white settlers living in Green Township and 5 black slaves working for their owners. In 1818, Indian War veteran Gabriel Bowen purchased 640 acres (26 km²) along the White River from David Dickson for $1 per acre ($50 per hectare). He named his new township after General George Washington's birthday, July 4th, 1818. This was one of several townships created during the territorial period to commemorate important events or people such as General Andrew Jackson's victory over Native Americans at Horseshoe Bend on November 3rd, 1813 or Jesse James' Capture of Waco on February 14th, 1857. In 1836–37 Fayette County was formed from parts of Hendricks and Taylor Counties; Fort Wayne continued to be an unincorporated village within Fayette County until it became an incorporated city in 1907. The post became an important center for trade in the region, and its location made it an ideal spot for the construction of Fort Dearborn, which served as the first major military installation in what is now Indiana. In 1835, Anderson was renamed Indianapolis after General William H. Harrison, who had joined forces with General Andrew Jackson to fight against Tecumseh's Indian resistance movement. The city's growth continued during the 1840s and 1850s as a result of its strategic location: it lay between Lake Michigan and Ohio Valley country, making it valuable territory for both sides in the American Civil War.
