The town was laid out in 1838 by John Sibley, who also founded Fort Wayne; it became one of the original towns in Harrison County. In 1861, Anderson was annexed to Terre Haute Township; when that township was disbanded in 1871, it merged into Anderson County. As a result of its annexation, Anderson became one of the largest townships in Indiana at that time—it had a population exceeding 1,000 people at any given time during most of its history. In 1920s and 1930s Anderson experienced significant African American migration due to new industrial development around larger cities such as Chicago and Philadelphia; this Migration led to increasing diversity within Anderson's population as well as increased social tensions which often erupted into violence or riots between black residents and white residents over differences in economic status or housing conditions
