Anderson is a city in, and the county seat of, Hendricks County, Indiana. The population was 17,694 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis– Kokomo– Lafayette, IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what is now Anderson was a man named John Anderson who arrived there in 1814. The town site was chosen because it had an excellent location for trade with surrounding villages. A post office called "Anderson" was established in 1836, and by 1840, the population had grown to about 100 people. In 1853, the US Congress passed a resolution naming Anderson as one of five towns in central Indiana to be given official status as a city. On March 11, 1854, Mayor James Breen announced that Anderson would become an incorporated city under state law and on July 1st of that year its incorporation became effective. Anderson quickly grew into a busy burg with many businesses and residents. By 1860, it had tripled its size to over 250 people and boasted two hotels and several thousand square feet (20 m2) of commercial space. The largest businesses at this time were grocery stores and meat markets which continued to grow during the late 19th century when local produce became more popular among Americans across sectional lines. Anderson's history can be traced back to its early days as an agricultural community founded by Quakers on the banks of the White River in 1795. Agricultural production played a significant role in early Anderson life and helped support both localQuaker pastors and their congregants as well as provide some stability during times of flux within American society during this time period. Cottonwood trees were abundant enough to provide lumber for housing purposes but also produced fruit that could be eaten fresh or used to make jams, jellies, pickles, pies, etc., which provided income for residents throughout the years. By 1830, rice had become an important crop due to its high yields and began being grown here too; rice cultivation would continue to play an important role in Anderson's economy until after World War II when other crops took over.
